83 hours
By Mary E. Young
In 1968, twenty year old Barbara Jane Mackle was kidnapped from a hotel room she was staying in with her mom. Two individuals, took her into the Georgia woods and buried her in a coffin-like box. Although she was told they would check on her every two hours, she was left utterly alone for eighty-three hours. At her parents house in Florida, her father received a ransom call, demanding $500,000.00 in unmarked twenty dollar bills.

I found the first half of this book riveting. I was unable to put it down until Barbara was rescued and restored to her parents. I found the search for her kidnappers and their trials to be a bit anti-climatic after the action-packed beginning. Overall, I enjoyed the book and reading about a historical kidnapping.

Still A Riveting Read
By John D. Cofield
I bought my copy of 83 Hours Till Dawn when I was in high school back in the early 1970s, Recently I ran across it in one of my bookcases and reread it for the first time in at least 35 years. Written by Gene Miller in collaboration with Barbara Jane Mackle herself, 83 Hours Till Dawn is just as riveting a read as it was when I first read it.

In December 1968 Barbara Jane Mackle was a twenty year old student at Emory University in Atlanta. The daughter of a wealthy Florida developer, she was a bright and well liked young woman from a happy family. Because she had contracted Asian flu she was staying in a motel near the Emory campus with her mother. One night a man in a policeman's cap pounded on the door, forced his way inside, and with the help of a female accomplice kidnaped Barbara. They drove her into what was then a rural area northwest of Atlanta and buried her alive inside a specially constructed box. There she remained for the next 83 hours while a drama unfolded.

This is a well written minute by minute chronicle of that drama, featuring the Mackle family and their associates, the FBI and other law enforcement agents who worked to solve the case, the kidnapers Gary Steven Krist and Ruth Eisemann Schier, and the host of accidental witnesses and passers by who found themselves playing small roles. It makes for unputdownable reading even today after nearly fifty years. The most gripping sections are those told by Barbara herself as she dealt with the miserable conditions inside the coffin-like box and tried to keep her hopes for rescue alive. When you read that the FBI agents who discovered her location and rescued her all had to keep wiping tears out of their eyes, you'll need some tissues as well. The concluding chapters detailing the arrests and trials of Krist and Eisemann Schier are also fascinating for their insights into the minds and motives of a smart and deeply troubled man and his deluded accomplice.

I was 11 years old when Barbara Jane Mackle was kidnaped, and I vividly remember the newspaper headlines and TV reports over those December days. Her courage in agreeing to relive her trauma by collaborating with Miller are commendable. I trust that the wish she expressed in the final chapter that she "just wants it to be over," has been fulfilled.
