Cave of Tigers: The Living Zen Practice of Dharma Combat, by John Daido Loori

Dharma combat is a practice form unique to Zen in which student and teacher confront each other before a live audience, so to speak. The Zen master takes a seat at the front of the meditation hall and is approached by students, one by one, who challenge the master with questions. The Zen master challenges them in return, and the pithy, energetic exchanges become a teaching for all involved.

Cave of Tigers is proof that the ancient practice of dharma combat is alive and well in American Zen. It consists of records of actual dharma combat sessions between John Daido Loori Roshi and his students at Zen Mountain Monastery. The highly charged encounters range from koan-like exchanges to practical discussions of meditation, Buddhist philosophy, and the always-pertinent issue of bringing spiritual practice into everyday life.

Review
"Daido Roshi challenges today's Zen students with quotes from sages who lived a thousand or so years ago. The deep, unrehearsed life questions that these words evoke in the students are answered with often practical, funny, or mind-shattering responses. Yet Daido Roshi offers those who come forward nothing to hang on to. This book is important for students and novice teachers alike. It is testimony to the vital relevance of alive Zen practice in our time."—Roshi Bernie Glassman, author of Bearing Witness and Instructions to the Cook

"In this unique book we get a rare glimpse of the face-to-face, intimate encounter of earnestly questioning student and accomplished Zen master. Each exchange has the potential to bring insight, even to the reader."—Jan Chozen Bays, author of Jizo Bodhisattva

"Cave of Tigers brings the age-old practice of Dharna combat into a modern context. Daido Roshi's grasp of the historical material and his long experience of teaching through these Zen encounters with students make this a valauble presentation of an otherwise neglected subject. I recommend it to anyone wishing to learn about this traditional and still very vital practice."—Dennis Genpo Merzel, Roshi, author of Big Mind—Big Heart: Finding Your Way

About the Author

Loori was an award-winning photographer and videographer. His art and wildlife photography formed the core of a unique teaching program that integrated art and wilderness training by cultivating a deep appreciation of the relationship of Zen to our natural environment. He was a dharma heir of the influential Japanese Zen master Taizan Maezumi Roshi and he authored many books.

I Found This Book Marvelous and Helpful
By Michael K. Crowley
I usually don't review Dharma books because whether or not a book is useful to a practitioner depends a great deal on where they are on the path, what obstacles they face, and so forth. But while looking for books on Dogen "Cave of Tigers" came up on the screen and I noticed the one-star rating and was pretty mystified. As I write this, I'm reading "Cave" for the third time. John Daido Loori Roshi's books have been extremely helpful to my practice, especially "The True Dharma Eye" (a masterwork), "Teachings of the Earth", "Invoking Reality", "The Heart of Being" and this one, "Cave of Tigers." "Cave of Tigers" describes formal interactions ("Dharma Combat") between Daido Loori and students as they deal with various important obstacles that arise on the path. These interactions are fascinating, revealing, authentic and helpful. They are rarely--although occasionally--truly confrontational. The teacher's goal here seems to be to push students to take responsibility for where they are stuck and gently help them to help themselves across the river to the other shore. Even when students are 80% right, the teacher's job is to throw them off balance anyway so they don't fall to either side (the Absolute or the Relative) in practice.

Each chapter begins with a serious question about the nature of practice and how to approach conditioned reality and remain completely engaged in reality without abandoning what is being learned in practice. Then the students engage the zen teacher with questions relevant or tangential, or discuss complications in their practice. What unfolds is a great surprise, and it sometimes requires several readings to understand precisely what has transpired between teacher and student. Many of the students get stuck in the same places I get stuck, so it is not just entertaining to read this but relevant to my own practice. During some of the encounters, Master Daido Loori reveals things about his own life that make him extremely human; this is not the old style zen master who supplies only shouts and beatings, but a very intimate sort of teaching. Nevertheless, this is not "anything goes" "bliss out" zen either, but the type of zen that dumps enormous personal responsibility in the practitioner's lap. Here there are no easy answers; sometimes there are no answers at all, but there is the finger of compassion always pointing in the right direction.

What I find so great about this book is that when my obstacles in practice change, I see new things in these interactions. Some interactions that I initially dismissed as superficial, upon a second or third reading, yielded gems of insight. This particular zen order is deeply influence by Master Dogen, so it is very concerned not simply with "getting enlightened" but how to actualize this gift in the world, so a lot of this Dharma Combat has to do with bringing practice into the real world, and this is another reason that I found the interactions between students coping with real-world problems and a very practical, down-to-earth and unpretentious zen master so inspiring. Another teaching I find important in this book is the advice to "become the obstacle" rather than viewing it as separate from the self. This intimacy allows one to completely reframe how one views the hindrance. It is a very personal and gentle way of transforming something fearsome into something friendly.

The students are not an appendage here--caricatures to be lectured to--but extremely lively co-creators whose full engagement in the process contributes to the book's spell. They are often as interesting, and helpful, as the zen teacher.

I hope if you are a practitioner you will consider giving this book a look. If you initially find a particular encounter unimportant or superficial, just for fun wait a week or month and revisit it.

I recently purchased a second copy of "Cave of Tigers" because I've bent the corners of, and made so many notes on, my first copy.
