Astrology of the Seers is an excellent introduction to Jyotish, as it is very clearly written, with elegance, and a poetic touch. As usual Vamadeva Sastri lives up to his name, and his book shows it. this is a very "spiritualised" approach to Jyotish, and was very helpful for me to get a foundation in seeing the Grahas as "spiritual beings" or Devas...Vamadeva's scholarship and grasp of the subtle is simply amazing, the mind is illumined by his fine writing, and the heart is melted in Divine Love. all i can say is thank you, thank you, thank you!! Koti Koti pranams to you David!

When I signed up for Brendan Feeleys' introductory
course in jyotish (vedic astrolgy), this was the textbook.
Need I say more?
OK, for the person new to vedic astrology, this
is probably the best first step.
It covers all the basics; the philosophy behind it,
the planetary significators,signs,houses, aspects,lordships,planetary periods (dashas), harmonic charts, introductions to medical astrology & remedial astrology, and a bevy of sample charts.
Deep concise and fun! Worth every penny.

A lot of information

I am new to Vedic astrology, but this book has really captured it's essence and given me a good perspective into it. It is so cluttered with the amount of important issues that need to be covered it kind of leaves me in the dust, wondering if I missed the green light telling me when to go. Not only that I am to understand this only covers so much and that there is even more to learn, i.e. Nakshatras, ect. Apart from the devastating amount of inspiration I get from just reading this book, I feel I will read it again to fully understand what this book offers on this subject, before reading other books on this topic.

Metabolic engineering is an emerging, interdisciplinary field with applications to the production of chemicals, fuels, materials, and pharmaceuticals. The field's novelty lies in the integration of the techniques of molecular biology with the tools of mathematical analysis, to help elucidate metabolic flux control and rational selection of targets for genetic modification. By providing a rigorous description of cell physiology, metabolic engineering also facilitates functional genomics. Its primary objective is to identify specific genetic and environmental manipulations that lead to enhancement of yield and productivity of biotechnological processes, or the overall improvement of cellular properties.
Key elements of the book include pathway integration and consideration of metabolic flux as a fundamental determinant of cell physiology. Metabolic Engineering keeps mathematical complexity to a minimum ,and provides sidebars as additional background on various mathematical operations. Computational tools for pathway analysis are described, and a glossary of biological terms facilitates use of the book by a broad audience of biochemists, molecular biologists, microbiologists, and biochemical/biomedical engineers.

About the Author
Gregory Stephanopoulos is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at MIT. He received his B.S. from the National Technical University of Athens, his M.S. from the University of Florida and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, all in Chemical Engineering. Upon graduation, he joined the Chemical Engineering Faculty of the California Institute of Technology, where he served as Assistant and Associate Professor until 1985. In 1985 he was appointed Professor of Chemical Engineering at MIT where he has been ever since.Stephanopoulos' work has appeared in more than 150 publications and 7 patents. He has been recognized with the Dreyfus Foundation Teacher Scholar Award (1982), Excellence in Teaching Award (1984), and Technical Achievement Award of the AIChE (1984). He has been a Presidential Young Investigator and the Chairman of the Food Pharmaceutical & Bioengineering Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (1992). In 1992 he was a Visiting Professor at the International Research Center for Biotechnology at Osaka University and was elected a Founding Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. In 1996 he chaired the first Conference on Metabolic Engineering and gave the inaugural Bayer Lecture on Biochemical Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. He was honored with the FPBE Division Award at AIChE in 1997.

This book was a very pleasant surprise. It is rigurous yet accessible enough to provide a very clear picture of the metabolic pathway engineering field. Complicated topics like metabolic control and flux analisys (MCA) are very well treated. The examples are usually relevant and well explained, however, some need pen and paper to work up some jumps in the reasoning train. The first chapter is just an introduction whereas the second chapter is a review of cellular metabolism that may result too dense for most people (including myself). Most biologists can probably do away skipping it (althought some examples involving transport where quite interesting). I am glad I didn't put the book away because on chapter 3 things get really exciting. If you are interested in understanding how metabolic pathways are organized and what analytical tools are there available to model them (and eventually "reconfigure") this book for you.

Note: the book is meatn to be undestood and it is nice to see MCA depleted of the hoopla many authors insist on surrounding it with.

Now that you have met your biological family...

SPOILER: As much as I loved the first book in this series I have to say I was disappointed in this second book. My main objection is the unrealistic event of not only Lady Victoria Fitzwilliam being allowed to nurse and stay alone with Darcy in his injured and unconscious state but also the horrific sexual advances she made on his body while he was in that state. I don’t care if they were close and loving cousins or if the families allowed them time alone on many occasions; it is not acceptable behavior, not now, not then and not in JAFF, in my opinion.

This book tells the story of Elizabeth’s return to her biological family and her adjustment there. She does this while keeping ties with her “adopted” family. And they insist she keep her companion, her ladies’ maid and her dowry. I found the love and support, the visits, and the care given by the Duke, Avery, and Lady Sophia so gratifying. The Bennet family held no blame towards these important people in Lizzy’s life. But Lizzy finds her biological family as described in canon and even her relationship as her father’s favorite being reinstated makes no difference to Mr. Bennet when she points out his neglect in monitoring and disciplining his two younger silly daughters.

Mr. Collins shows up with expected results. Lady Catherine has no changes in speech or behaviors, just in location of such. Wickham is as always; again there is a brief interlude when he and Elizabeth seem to be friends as he pours out his troubles to her. Bingley: Bingley is even more tepid in his behaviors of showing up, paying attentions and leaving without an explanation. The soldiers’ presence and the Brighton adventure remain a part.

But at the center of our story is our dear couple, Darcy and Elizabeth. They have declared their feelings to each other at the end of Book 1 but he now stays away to give her time to adjust and find her footing in her “new family” and in her new position in society. They can’t write as there is nothing formal in their attachment so they get little news of each other. When he does set out to visit Hertfordshire…well, here I am not going to go any further. Events, people and circumstances turn against them. The misunderstanding between ODC is a new variation from Jane Austen’s P&P.

Much is taken from canon in this book. We read snippets and paragraphs of the same dialogue. Darcy and Elizabeth do get their HEA but it is not while strolling the lanes around Longbourn. I read this book in one day and was happy to learn the rest of the story. I just could have done without the event I mentioned in the first paragraph.

A nice way to finish the series

I enjoyed these books, the first far more than the second, but overall was happy with the outcome. I think the secondary story of the pregnancy was a step to far as it became unbelievable when the fallout was minor. If the reaction equaled the trouble stirred with the storyline, it should have been expanded even further. And with less time on the already overplayed stolen child and missing family, that to me became boring and overplayed as it was mainly covered in the first novel. All in all a good solid book.

Everything did change

I have mixed feeling about this book. The premise was far fetched. Lizzy being kidnapped as a child and raised as a titled Lady was a stretch. Darcy figuring all of this out was even more of a stretch and what followed after the reveal was pure fantasy. My love of Lizzy and Darcy's romance has made my search for a good variation almost impossible to find. I wanted to find that spark, unfortunately, this variation did not come close to making me care.

A Good Argument for the Abolition of All Sequels

I read Joseph Heller's CATCH-22 on a rainy day, with nothing to do but gaze at the novels my father had collected over the years. Plunging in to avert crushing boredom, I discovered what all readers before me have, the absolute brilliance of it. CATCH-22 is one of the finest war novels I have read, surpassing even M*A*S*H* and THE SHORT-TIMERS in its audacious mix of humour, horror, and insanity. I also was overwhelmed by the fact that this was Heller's first novel. When I completed it, I rushed to a second-hand bookstore to buy CLOSING TIME. I had become such an instant fan of Heller's work, that it never crossed my mind that some things are better left alone.
Why, oh why, did Heller pen CLOSING TIME? CATCH-22 did not need a continuation. It was lightning in a bottle, a once-in-a-lifetime event that could never be repeated. But Heller, late in his career, decided, for better or for worse, that Yossarian and Milo Minderbinder had lives worth examining yet again.
The plot begins with Yossarian (whom I desperately wanted to meet after finishing CATCH-22) in a hospital, now older, still bitter, but unfortunately, not funny. As the labyrinth storyline progresses, Yossarian bumps up against a plethora of eccentric characters, both old friends and new enemies. There's the Chaplain (who can produce heavy water from his bowels), a president addicted to videogames, a bizarre wedding coordinator with dreams of the ideal society wedding within a decrepit bus station, and Milo, the schemer extrordinaire, now trying to sell invisible bombers to clueless generals. All this, plus a subplot in an underground playworld that may or may not be Hell.
Why doesn't this work? Part of the problem, I believe, is that CATCH-22 had a genuinely insane setting in which to place its insane characters. The comparison of war with mental imbalance may not be new, but CATCH-22 made it fresh and invigorating. CLOSING TIME finds Heller without such a setting, frantically trying to create insanity where there was none before. It's not enough to simply show nutty people; they need a context in which they can flourish. CLOSING TIME doesn't provide them with one.
Is it fair to keep comparing CLOSING TIME to CATCH-22? Probably not, but Heller invites the comparison. Reading CLOSING TIME is akin to attending your high school reunion. You meet all the people you once knew and loved, but despite your being glad to see them, you leave in a sonewhat depressed state. You've grown up, but they haven't. They were fun in school, but in the real world, you can't wait for them to leave you alone.

A good book on the effects of growing old in modern society

Judging from the reviews on this page, it seems to me like most (but not all) of the negative reviews are from people who were merely expecting more Catch-22. Some comment that Closing Time has nothing to do with Catch-22, some that it is merely a poor rehashing of the material from Heller's earlier work, thus implying that the content is effectively similar, albeit inferior. I suppose I'm lucky not to be a Novel Nerd, because it seemed to me that Closing Time does an excellant job of what Heller set out to do: show us the effects of time, age, and society on young people with strong ideals and direction. The meandering reminicences of Yossarian and the others are not shoddily constructed prose, they are the sounds of old men trying to put their past into the context of what their present has become, and vice-versa.
If I could offer any constructive negative critism of this book, it would be that the surreal juxtaposition of concrete life, the military, and Hell seemed somewhat ill-defined, and as a result Heller's conclusion to the novel lacks some of the conviction that it could have had.

This bone-dry history provides information but little inspiration with lists of the tasks performed on ranches, as well as biographical sketches. Maret, a sociologist and rancher, brings up but rarely probes enticing and sound theories about the importance of women's roles in ranching--such as that women working on ranches have been undercounted because they are often family members rather than employees. Only occasionally do the personalities of the female ranchers profiled break through. When they do, it is in the description of specific incidents, like the time a longhorned cow pinned Angela Bonifazi, who freed herself and commanded her granddaughter to "go get her a Band-Aid" for a five-inch wound. The women in ranch-related business include Cindy Warnke Walls, the owner of a "fitting" service that grooms show cattle; Becky Everette, who evaluates bull semen; and Heddy Butler, who has innovated the use of computer technology in cattle breeding. But Maret has a knack for making these interesting women seem unremarkable. She quotes Butler spouting the obvious, "The computer is tough. View it as a tool. . . ." Photos not seen by PW.

Through profiles of typical (and some atypical) women, with photographs she took of them at work, Maret shows how women serve not only as "keepers of the land", but also as a force for modernization in the cattle industry. The women she shows include a cattle fitter, sale barn manager, and herd health veterinarian. They are owners and managers of historic family ranches. They write computer software for planning optimal crossbreeding operations, they run equipment in artificial insemination companies, and they encourage industry emphasis on nutrition and consumer interests. Women have always been there, Maret shows, participating in ranching and the cattle industry as silent but active partners. Maret's portrait of their involvement and analysis of its significance will fascinate readers with an interest in ranching, social history, women's studies, and the sociology of work.

About the Author
Elizabeth Maret is an associate professor of sociology at Texas A&M University, a rancher, and a certified artificial insemination technician. She earned B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. Her research and publications have focused on women in the labor force.
