When you think of paella you bring to mind the traditional dish with chicken and seafood. This book contains other ingredient recipes. If you eat a lot of rice you might be interested in this book. You will not get tired of these dishes.

Required Reading.

There is a history of Justinian called The Secret History, by Procopios, a functionary of the Byzantine emperor. It was called "the secret history" because it purported to disclose the personal habits and characteristics of the Emperor Justinian and his wife, Theodora, facts not generally known by the public at large.

Naomi Kline calls this book the "secret history"of Iraq. In much the same way, this excellent history of the Iraq Occupation and the subsequent role of oil and politics in post-invasion Iraq is a secret history, disclosing facts not revealed by the news agencies (in the United States, at least) and not generally known by the public at large. Not that the public did not suspect that there were ulterior motives to the Iraq invasion. Oil, and the acquisition of oil, has long been suspected at the real reason Iraq was occupied. This book confirms this suspicion. But with a difference: the author provides the reader with facts little reported to American media thanks to military censorship.

The public at large is hardly at fault for not knowing the full story. Since the Invasion began it was covered by "embedded" journalists, giving sanitized, censored reports of the carnage as if it they were providing the narration to a video game. Any accurate reporting was stopped by the military; the journalists from CNN or Fox should have been receiving their paychecks from the US military. Any meaningful reporting, which was not a pretty sight, had to be obtained from Al-Jazeera or foreign newspapers or news magazines.

There were reports, of course, of high-level visits to Iraq from Presidents of Cabinet members and politicians. The news agencies would not give the reasons for these visits other than showing, for example, President Bush smiling, handing out turkey dinners to the troops for Thanksgiving. This book, thankfully, actually describes the reasons for these visits, who was visited, what was said.

The narrative is replete with facts supporting the entire, brutal, story of the Invasion. The author is meticulous about providing a complete, detached narrative of the scramble of the oil companies to acquire concessions and agreements for rights to Iraq's oil. Significantly, he is far more generous than one may suspect on the motivations for the invasion. Early on, he discounts that oil was the sole reason for invading the country. Since the oil nationalizations which Hussain introduced in 1975 were not in effect, and in light of the chaos which ensued after the invasion, the author quite reasonably notes that the oil cartels would have a naturally interest in allowing the oil to flow once again. The author also relates, again in meticulous detail, how the cartels attempted to create a veneer of legality in the negotiations for the oil rights.

The book provides a fascinating look into the world of international oil, both in its business and legal aspects. This book provides in painstaking detail to destroy a country and culture, install a puppet leadership, divide the population into factions, and attempt to institute the invading county's agenda. The US media covered many stories about bombing, carnage and destruction, but precious little about the actions to take over Iraq's oil industry. This book provides page-turning details about the behind the scenes actions. A part of that veneer of legitimacy was for the Occupation Forces to push the Oil Law through the Parliament they helped create. A particularly compelling portion of the book relates not only to the failures of the Occupation Forces in winning the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people (some of those failures are downright laughable if it weren't true), but relates how the proposed the Oil Law was never enacted and enforceable.

How ironic it is that after all those lives and monies lost and after all the suffering needlessly inflicted in the invasion of Iraq, the Western Powers still do not have to this day the thing they had most sought after and which constituted the driving motivation of all the invasion, solid oil legislation to the oil companies' satisfaction. As the author relates, the enforceability of the contacts made after the troops withdrew is doubtful. This book is most of all a testament to the indomitable will of the Iraqi people. It is highly recommended and fills a painful need for an unvarnished history of the Iraq invasion.

Important Alternative History to Iraq War and Occupation

The 'war-for-oil' hypothesis of Iraq 2003 was often derided as a "conspiracy theory", a term used by former UK prime minister Tony Blair. Greg Muttitt's Fuel on the Fire provides an excellent rebuttal to that line of thinking: while acknowledging that the war was not fought for any single reason (there may have been some genuine concerns about WMDs, democracy, and human rights, or the US leadership might have held a grudge against Saddam and his ability to thwart US efforts towards his removal, etc.), oil was a prime compelling factor leading to the war.

The book posits three main theses: the US-UK invasion was motivated primarily by oil; the Iraqi labor movement was instrumental in hindering key US objectives (in particular an oil law to allow foreign oil corporations to easily acquire contracts for Iraqi oil and gas) from being realized; and the sectarian bloodshed in Iraq was caused in large part by the attitudes and policy decisions of the Coalition Provisional Authority.

Muttitt's understanding of the first point is necessarily nuanced. Few auctioned oil fields have gone to American firms, though most of the service contracting has. (NY Times, 6/16/2011) Thus the war cannot be said to simply be about stealing Iraq's oil. More crucially than adding to the reserves of US multinationals is reducing the price of oil and weakening OPEC. Iraq's oil reserves are large enough to affect the price of world oil, and handing them over to private foreign companies allows production to occur without the blessing of OPEC. Of course Iraq could sign contracts demanding that oil companies adhere to production quotas set by OPEC, but the Iraqi government and oil ministry was under great pressure from the US to give generous terms to oil companies and drew up the contracts in secrecy.

Where Muttitt's argument is weakest is not entirely his own fault; many of the documents needed to conclusively determine the causes of the war are still classified (such as those from Vice President Cheney's energy task force). Instead he provides a substantial amount of suggestive quotes and documents from governments and oil companies as well as a rundown of US behavior during the occupation (such as in pushing the oil law). With those caveats in mind, Muttitt makes a strong case.

He also makes a forceful argument for the benefits wrought by Iraqi labor unions, one the of the few functioning civil society organizations in Iraq throughout the occupation. Despite the Bush administration's alleged concern with democracy, Paul Bremer, administrator of Iraq from 2003 to 2005, maintained a Saddam-era law outlawing public sector labor unions, and furthermore banned workers from electing their own managers. Successive Iraqi governments have further clamped down on unions, yet their influence was strong enough to block an oil law from being passed, which would have allowed oil contracts to be made solely by the executive branch rather than the current Parliamentary approval now required.

Finally, Muttitt demonstrates that most Iraqis do not see themselves in sectarian terms (apart from the Kurds); rather than a Shia or a Sunni, they are Muslim; rather than Turkoman or Arab, they are Iraqi. Yet Bremer's appointed Iraqi Governing Council emphasized the ethnic and religious makeup of the group. The message was clear: identity politics would trump policy and ideology. The US preferred an Iraq divided along sectarian lines (though Muttitt is careful not to make this out to be a conspiracy) as a united Iraq could more easily oust the occupiers, since that was the will of the vast majority of the population.

Like many books on post-invasion Iraq, Fuel on the Fire is a grim tale of the suffering of Iraqis under occupation. However, hope still remains, in particular with the labor movement and the rest of civil society; the country is still without the much sought after oil law. For those wishing to understand the invasion and subsequent occupation, this is required reading.

Really nothing here

The promise of theta healing is immense, but the vision of accessing our subconscious and unconscious minds seems to be missing from ThetaHealing's approach. The whole premise of re-discovering and re-connecting to who we truly are as expressions of the One Source is to integrate the wounded parts of our self (Ego). "Belief work" from this book actually strengthens the Ego with virtually every "download" starting with the phrase 'I know...'

The suggestion of supplements is completely generic and without any regard to an individual's possible need. And the writing style in describing diseases and disorders is overly simplistic and lacking any depth of someone who has been duly educated and properly trained.

Healing is not anywhere as complicated as listing science's labels (diseases and disorders) of what is essentially disintegrative energies run amok in our integrative energy systems (the human body). When we choose to align our hearts and our minds with that which we truly are (Love), healing happens - no matter what the issue is labeled as.

This book has lots of good information. Several diseases and disorders mostly focusing on the more common issues. Still a good reference for helping with certain problems. I just got it but I use it just about everyday, even if it's just to read over what I read the day before. Organized well easy to find what your looking for.

She manages to launch her rickety school bus into space and steers it around the solar system, visiting the moon, the sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars before an asteroid knocks out one of the taillights. When Miss Frizzle leaves the bus to investigate, she gets lost in space, and the students visit the outer planets without her. They reconnect with her eventually, and the group ends up back in the classroom, making a chart and a mobile based on their discoveries. Once again, author and illustrator let readers laugh while they learn in an animated, fact-filled adventure. Ages 6-9.

The planetarium is closed for repairs, so the Magic School Bus blasts off on a real tour of the solar system. After their previous field trips, the children in Ms. Frizzle's class are all blase about such things; as they land on the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and fly by the other planets and the Sun, they comment on what they see, generate a blizzard of one- or two-sentence reports on special topics and--even while Ms. Frizzle is temporarily left behind in the asteroid belt--crack terrible jokes ("Could Saturn take a bath? Yes, but it might leave a ring!"). Although some of the information is radically simplified--people are said to float in space because "without a large mass nearby . . . they do not have weight"--Cole keeps the narrative specific without burdening it with loads of facts. Degen's fresh, energetic illustrations complement the breathless pace perfectly. Basic story is good - extra information makes it hard to read to little ones

A fun story that follows the first episode of the first season of MSB pretty closely, but the extra factual information/dialogue in the margins make it hard to read to ages 4-6 (especially if they suspect you're leaving something out!). It might be more enjoyable for ages 9-10, who can benefit from that info and can read at their leisure.

geeky and intellectual, and wonderfully un-American!

This is a great, almost un American book in that kids are told that it's OK, even wonderful and wondrous to be science geeks, be curious. Love the Frizz when she says "take chances, get messy, make mistakes," and encourages her students to explore. In a society that elevates sports and violence for boys, and beauty and cattiness for girls, this series stands out for encouraging gender neutral intellectualism and academic achievement. My geeky 5 year old can't get enough, having finally found fictional characters that reflect her and encourage her. Factual substance-wise, I as a 40 year old have learned tons.

comic-book format for learning

I am impressed with the way the comic-book style of this book can really teach. The pages have the storyline text, and then plenty of puns and quips, some dialog, associated reasearch projects done by the class, charts, and great illustrations.

This is a series, so to get you familiar, Ms. Frizzle is a teacher who takes her class on field trips. Their school bus can change and transport them anywhere, so the field trips end up being real experiences. The books do a tremendous job of carrying the story and the visuals.

As a mom, the puns do little for me, but my seven-year-old really likes them and repeats them. Good enough.

Rabagliati line seems to get better in each of his graphic novels. In this one he pays homage to the masters of the French and Belgian masters of the clear line with many references. The story follows Paul back to his teenage years, growing up in the 70s with the background of a convulse French Canada. The detail to the secondary characters and not indulging in nostalgia make this a great book, one of the best of the Paul books and that's a lot to say

I've read a couple of the author's earlier slice-of-life graphic novels about Paul which were written about a decade ago -- but they were set in the late `70s and early `80s, when the protagonist was an adult trying to make his way in the art world. This one takes place when Paul is about eleven, so the author seems to moving backward. Or something.

The setting is Montreal during the time when the FLQ was shifting from protests into terrorism, but Paul is concerned only with trying to learn to draw comics, trying to learn to play guitar, and trying to learn about girls (especially Helene, who appears to be pursuing him, and with him he shares their mutual first kiss). Paul has an older sister (the sarcastic bane of his life) and a number of friends but he's largely a loner. Then he discovers the Cub Scout Pack at the local church (you had to be Catholic to be a Cub in Quebec in those days) and jumps in with both feet, taking part in the sing-alongs and the games, learning to be alone in the woods at night during Winter Camp, and generally having a whole lot of fun. The three scoutmasters (one of them apparently a priest) are nicely done, too, with their own concerns when the kids aren't around -- especially Daniel, younger than the others and an avid photographer, whose own political connections become suspect when the government cracks down on the separatists.

That's pretty much the plot, just mostly ordinary everyday events and their effect on completely believable everyday people. Until the ending. Which comes shockingly out of left field and will leave you slightly stunned. This series has won the author/artist a number of awards, all of them fully justified.

Videoscribe for Dummies- Exactly what I was looking for

It's so simple that my eight year old creates them too!"- written on the first few pages by author Tracie Rollins.....that was enough to push me over the edge and into the world of attempting to build my own animations. A Great Resource for Learning How to Video Scribe

I received a copy of this book to preview for this post. Although I personally know the author, I have to say that this book was very easy to read. It's comprehensive and contains everything I wanted to know and more. I was able to read this book in one day and feel confident that I can use my new found knowledge to create a video scribe. Tracie makes it easy to learn this software, especially since there isn't an existing manual.

A God-sent

I found this book through the book "The Maker's Diet" which was given to me when I was 18 and sat on a shelf to be picked up 2 years later after the birth of my first child. I was struggling to breastfeed after having a major loss of blood (OBGYN's mistake led to this and a major birth trauma). I had virtually no milk supply. Tried everything! Persevered for 6 horrible long exhausting weeks before I finally gave up. I did not even become engorged upon stopping, that's how low my supply was. Looking back now i was very malnourished from a terrible diet of fast food and soda during pregnancy, plus the major loss of blood after birth- there's no way my body could produce anything. My teeth were crumbling, horrible cavities everywhere. I was very much against infant formula but I had no other choice, so i started my son of Enfamil. He was colicky, constipated, constant projectile spit up, not sleeping well, and I was DEPRESSED. I was even having to use infant suppositories for him. This is NOT NORMAL!! No matter how common it is, it's not normal...
I began reading a lot to try and help keep my mind off of the deep depression I was experiencing (Lack of sleep, stress of being a young new wife and mother, no family in the area, plus my very unhealthy and hormone depleted body). Then, one day I came across the book that I had placed on a shelf two years prior (The Maker's Diet- a great book). When I started reading through some of the recipes, I noticed many of them were referencing this book called "Nourishing Traditions". I went to Barnes and Noble and bought this book the same week. Instantly saw how informative it was and how packed with recipes! I love it!! It opened my life to a completely new way of thinking/eating/ living. One of the first recipes i came across was the infant formula recipe. I thanked God because I knew he led me there, as I had PRAYED and cried out to God to help me find some way to feed my baby, and in the midst of feeling like such a massive failure for not being able to nurse my son, I realized that God had used my dad to give me The Maker's Diet, which I would pick up two years later out of desperation, which would in turn lead me to Nourishing Traditions... Long story short, I used the website provided in the book to scout out a source of raw milk locally, and within that week I found a raw milk cow share and signed up, and ordered all of the ingredients that I needed and started making my son's formula. From the first feeding, he was a much happier baby! He stopped fussing so much, he started SLEEPING through the night, AND he was NEVER AGAIN constipated! His bowel movements turned to mustard yellow, seedy, soft just as they were when I was nursing him.
Fast forward to two years later and having completely embraced the Nourishing Traditions lifestyle, my husband and I decided to try for a second child. This pregnancy went much differently. I took care of myself, the nourishing traditions way. I drank superfood green smoothies every single day with home made raw milk kefir, ate healthy (not 100%, but I tried to give my body everything it needed!), plenty of butter and coconut oil and eggs, took whole food supplements and herbs instead of synthetic pharmaceutical prenatals, and never once saw a doctor- only my midwives who I had a home birth with. Gave birth to my 9lb 4oz 23" long baby girl, ELEVEN days late (hey, she knew when she was ready!), at home with no medication, in an inflatable birthing pool. It was awesome. My milk came in within 2 days (holy heck did it come in!!), she never lost weight, she slept much better, was very alert and nursed very well, had no digestion issues and has always been SO HEALTHY! My son is very healthy too (thanks to being able to start making his formula at 6/7 weeks of age), but he did catch and still does tend to catch more illnesses than she ever has. I really do attribute this to the type of diet i ate while pregnant with her, versus the SAD (standard american diet) i ate while pregnant with him, as well as the first 6 weeks of powdered formula and the drug exposure he had during birth in the hospital....
ONE THING I have noticed that is astounding to me is the difference in their facial structures and teeth/jaw formation. After reading Weston Price's "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration", as well as Francis Pottenger's "Pottenger's Cats", it makes sense to me why this is so. My little girl has such a beautiful and wide jaw, with perfectly straight and spaced teeth which i know will allow for her permanents to grow in without crowding, while my son has very crowded teeth and a more narrow jaw and has already had cavities while my daughter has had ZERO. (SEE PICS!)
It really does make a difference what you eat before conception, during pregnancy, and what you feed your child.. (Btw, I supplemented with WAP homemade formula and eventually switched her to it completely when I decided to quit nursing- don't judge me)
I'm not saying everything in this book is completely 100% for everyone, but it worked for me and my babies. All of the information also led me into a completely different life as far as nutrition and eating. I try to stay away from grains completely these days as I have some long standing digestive issues, but if I do have them I believe they are best soaked or sprouted like this book says. Also, try sprouted nuts- SO DELICIOUS and so much better for you than roasted or even raw. Lots of good recipes in the book, and you'll get a ton of practice in the cooking and preparing of different foos. If nothing else, get it for the baby formula recipe and information pertaining to childhood nutrition. My favorite and most used part of the recipes in this book are the fermented foods and dairy.

The book that changed my life, how I think about food and particularly fats.

Sally Fallon’s Nourishing Traditions changed my life. Over a decade ago, and in the midst of many life stresses, I got a flu shot at work one year, and suddenly developed all sorts of allergies. I started to develop serious health problems – Asthma, Digestive issues, Raynaud’s, Sjogrens. Worried, I went for the first time in years to my Kaiser doctor, who admonished me about my cholesterol levels (228), and recommended statins. Fearing drugs more than high cholesterol, I told him I’d use natural means to reduce my serum cholesterol. And I did. By ingesting large gobs of oatmeal and by shunning saturated fats, I got my cholesterol down to 180 within the year. I was very proud. But I did not get well. I got sicker. I got every office flu, cough, cold out there. After a final bout of flu on top of flu, and probably driven by some shred of self-preservation, I googled ‘cholesterol good’. That is when I stumbled into the WAPF’s realmilk.com site, sampled some raw milk…and never looked back. I read about the cholesterol skeptics. I read about the incredible conflict of interest between Pharma and human health, and I read about the statin scam (that I nearly fell for). I was hurtling down the modern health highway of food shortcuts, to surefire disaster, and it was pure accident (and the good luck of bad health), that I came upon Sally Fallon and Mary Enig. Not everybody is so lucky. Many people get sick on nutrient deficient diets, then try to cure this with drugs, which have more side effects, which cause more knock on diseases, a vicious cycle that frequently damages them beyond repair. Dr. Mary Enig, Sally’s co-author, was a brilliant lipid biochemist who jeopardized her career to get the message of transfatty acids vs. wholesome saturated fats out to the public. ‘Nourishing Traditions’ and ‘Know Your Fats’ are my go-to food and fat-science bibles. These amazing women resisted bullying and bludgeoning by industry to impart their knowledge and wisdom of traditional food-ways to common people like me.
I grasped the notion of ‘body as terrain’ and ‘food as medicine’. I now eat delicious, pastured, fragrant, nutrient dense, food that is rich in butter, cream and coconut oil. I eat ferments, kefirs, kvasses, yogurts, organ meats, broths, stocks and vegetables of course (without pesticides). I prepare my breads the traditional way and the taste and aroma are incomparable. And my belly likes it too. My kitchen is fragrant once again with the Ghee that my mother and my grandmother before her made. Our insurance premiums are completely wasted because we have not been sick in the last eight years. Nary a cough, cold or flu. This way of living and eating has opened up my life in delightful ways to farmers markets, farmers and the wonderful kinship of likeminded people.
If you have children, feeding them NT food will make them stronger, smarter and healthier. If you are sick, you will get well on this food. The body WANTS to heal, and is set up to heal, if properly nourished. Many people with chronic degenerative disease I know, got not just better, but were cured. My recommendation is, ignore all other isms, fads and trends. Don’t just borrow the book from your library. Buy it. Take a week off from work to read it, imbibe the wisdom, and pass it forward. Sally and Mary probably saved my life. I am forever indebted to them.

Good reference book.

This is a great book. It is more of a reference book than a cookbook. There are better recipes out there for most things, but it can help you to get started on what for me was a life changing new way of eating. Includes in-depth information on why we should eat a certain way. And the mayo recipe is GREAT! Did you know that adding a tiny bit of whey to the mayo and then letting it sit on the counter for seven hours will increase the useful life by many weeks? The active bacteria in the whey serve as a preservative, so letting the mayo sit at room temp allows them to multiply. Then pop it in the fridge, and you can use it for a month or more - if it lasts that long!
