Good Natured: The Origins of Right and Wrong in Humans and Other Animals, by Frans B. M. de Waal

To observe a dog's guilty look.

to witness a gorilla's self-sacrifice for a wounded mate, to watch an elephant herd's communal effort on behalf of a stranded calf--to catch animals in certain acts is to wonder what moves them. Might there he a code of ethics in the animal kingdom? Must an animal be human to he humane? In this provocative book, a renowned scientist takes on those who have declared ethics uniquely human Making a compelling case for a morality grounded in biology, he shows how ethical behavior is as much a matter of evolution as any other trait, in humans and animals alike.

World famous for his brilliant descriptions of Machiavellian power plays among chimpanzees-the nastier side of animal life--Frans de Waal here contends that animals have a nice side as well. Making his case through vivid anecdotes drawn from his work with apes and monkeys and holstered by the intriguing, voluminous data from his and others' ongoing research, de Waal shows us that many of the building blocks of morality are natural: they can he observed in other animals. Through his eyes, we see how not just primates but all kinds of animals, from marine mammals to dogs, respond to social rules, help each other, share food, resolve conflict to mutual satisfaction, even develop a crude sense of justice and fairness.

Natural selection may be harsh, but it has produced highly successful species that survive through cooperation and mutual assistance. De Waal identifies this paradox as the key to an evolutionary account of morality, and demonstrates that human morality could never have developed without the foundation of fellow feeling our species shares with other animals. As his work makes clear, a morality grounded in biology leads to an entirely different conception of what it means to he human--and humane.

Amazon.com Review
In Good Natured Frans de Waal, ethologist and primatologist, asks us to reconsider human morality in light of moral aspects that can be identified in animals. Within the complex negotiations of human society, a moral action may involve thoughts and feelings of guilt, reciprocity, obligation, expectations, rules, or community concern. De Waal finds these aspects of morality prevalent in other animal societies, mostly primate, and suggests that the two philosophical camps supporting nature and nurture may have to be disbanded in order to adequately understand human morality. A theoretician, de Waal is meticulous in his research, cautious not to extrapolate too much from his findings, and logically sound in his arguments. He also writes with precision and a flair for the dramatic, carrying readers along with graceful ease and vivid examples.

From Publishers Weekly
Is morality a biological or cultural phenomenon? Can nonhuman animals be humane? Primatologist de Waal (Chimpanzee Politics) explores these questions in a provocative book and makes a strong case for biology. He is convinced that social tendencies come into existence via a genetic calculus rather than rational choice. He defends anthropomorphism, noting that it serves the same exploratory function as intuition in the sciences. He discusses aggression and altruism and offers abundant anecdotal evidence of moral behavior among primates and other animals?food sharing, protection, sympathy, guilt. De Waal argues that the remarkable trainability among certain species, e.g., sheepdogs and elephants, hints at a rule-based order among them. He takes issue with the animal rights movement; rights, he says, are normally accompanied by responsibilities, which cannot possibly apply to apes and other animals. Readers who enjoyed Why Elephants Weep (Jeffrey Masson and Susan McCarthy) will welcome this volume. Illustrations.

From Booklist
Ethologist de Waal is engaged in research that hits humans where they live. Observing monkeys and apes, he seeks to find and explain behaviors among them that bespeak qualities often thought to be exclusively human and artificial. In his new book, morality is the object of inquiry, and in incident-packed chapters on sympathy, hierarchy, exchange, and social accommodation among animals (besides his primate studies, he cites other researchers' work on nonprimates), he demonstrates how animals manifest morality and presents reasons for regarding moral behavior as natural. Not surprisingly, those reasons are social, beginning with the demands of familial loyalty and extending to the requirements of living with others of their species and even to getting along with friends of other species, such as zookeepers and researchers. Of course, in addition to enthralling readers with superbly written reportage of his work, de Waal wants them to consider what his research analogically suggests about human behavior and how to help our societies be happier. Like his marvelous Peacemaking among Primates (1989), this is prime science reading. Ray Olson

Compelling, thought-provoking study of primate behavior
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann
Frans de Waal is one of the best known primatologists in the United States, and GOOD NATURED shows why. This careful study of primate behavior, both non-human and human, explores the issue of morality and the complex emotions that give rise to it. De Waal's topics range from empathy to social rules to diplomacy as he describes specific examples across primate species.
The black and white pictures illustrate his points, but they are by no means the highlight of this book. De Waal's insights, which never read too much into specific behaviors, walk the fine line between objective scientific reporting and an acknowledgment of the kinship between all primates. Seeing primates through his expert eyes is an enlightening experience.
This is truly an extraordinary book. I recommend it to readers who have a keen interest in primatology, sociology, and/or the kinship between humans and other species.

Brilliant
By algo41
De Waal is brilliant, objective, careful in reaching conclusions, ethical, a good writer, and has a lot to say. He is very much aware of research in related fields, such as developmental psychology. He and others place great store on observation of animals in natural settings, but also use controlled experimentation, analogous to the type of studies psychologists are always performing on college students. While I think this was an outstanding book, I would acknowledge that the beginning is slower reading than the end: more focused on the necessary vocabulary, some of the controversies, more argumentative, a little redundant.

De Waal contrasts "lower" primates and chimpanzees so that we can better understand the evolution of morality, and such distinctions as that between learned adjustment and true empathy. Chimps will mourn, console, deceive; the alpha male will intervene in disputes where the only objective can be restoration of harmony. As all animals, their adaptive potential exceeds the range of behavior observed in natural settings. For example, in the wild, females do not usually spend much time with other adult females, whereas in captivity they do. In captivity, they may use their friendships/alliances to control overly aggressive males, and even influence who becomes the alpha male. While morality has a genetic basis, even in monkeys there is a cultural component. In one experiment, aggressive rhesus adolescents learned to be more tolerant after living with more peaceful stump tailed macaques for 6 months.

The adaptive potential of morality is that it fosters group cohesion, which for many species is essential for defense against predators, or to find or protect resources. This is not to deny that one basis of morality is the selfish gene: by helping kin, you are helping some of your own genes to survive, so "altruistic genes" tend to perpetuate themselves.

Richly Suggestive Work
By Paul Maury Lewis
This work succeeds most of all by gradually eroding invisible assumptions about morality as an exclusively human prerogative. Chapter by chapter, Frans De Waal builds a convincing and rich assembly of proto-moral practices among nonhuman primates, defining and illustrating terms such as empathy, nurturance, cognitive altruism, and many others along the way. The result, which can sometimes feel like a complicated mass of overlapping and related terms, is a kind of ground shift in perception. This, at any rate, seems to be what he aims to accomplish, staying within the warrant of observational evidence. For some readers this might be a kind of Copernican Revolution against the absolute centrality of human beings in the moral universe. We are not alone: we have moral ancestry and moral companionship (fast disappearing) in the wilderness, in the zoos, and in the animal research laboratories. [As an aside, it also seems clear that there could be no effective substitute for the actual first-hand experience of social primates that De Waal reports]

De Waal's occasional jabs against contemporary moral philosophers (Peter Singer seems to be a main target) are suggestive but not thorough (which is perhaps just as well given the aim of the work). In particular, I found De Waal's "floating pyramid" a poor improvement on the more common notion of an "expanding circle" of moral empathy, as employed by Singer and others. The two are the same except for De Waal's addition of a resource constraint, which ensures that one's circle of moral concern only expands as resources become available. On this account, the affluent will (or should) demonstrate greater moral concern than the poor for strangers in need. This is not in accord with facts as far as I can tell. In all, however, this is an exciting read with some especially memorable tales of animal morality.

A funny, erudite, and provocative exploration of puns, the people who make them, and this derided wordplay's remarkable impact on human history.

In The Pun Also Rises, John Pollack-a former World Pun Champion and presidential speechwriter for Bill Clinton-explains why puns matter: They revolutionized language and played a pivotal role in making the modern world possible. Skillfully weaving together stories and evidence from history, brain science, pop culture, literature, anthropology, and humor, The Pun Also Rises is an authoritative yet playful exploration of puns.

With an engaging narrative, this book answers fundamental questions: Just what are puns? Why do people make them? How did punning impact the development of human language, and how did that drive creativity and progress? And why, after centuries of decline, does the pun still matter?

At once entertaining and educational, this engaging book builds a compelling case for the powerful and enduring role of puns in human discourse and innovation, and why they'll always be more than just some antics.

I enjoyed it
By J. Spurway
A little humor
A little history
A little etymology
Just one point . I've been watching the History channel Ancient Aliens program and I have come to the conclusion that humans did not have a sense of humor or an imagination until sometime in the 1600s. I'm still working on the exact date though.
So any puns prior to the 1600s was the result of alien interaction with humans. This continues to be the reason so many humans don't find puns funny. And that's why aliens have turned to crop circles and probing humans.

This book delivers more than you would expect . I guess I sort of expected a couple of funny stories and a bunch of puns. Does a great historical retrospective on punning.

Insanely Simple: The Obsession That Drives Apple's Success, by Ken Segall

Simplicity isn’t just a design principle at Apple—it’s a value that permeates every level of the organization. It’s what helped Apple recover from near death in 1997 to become the most valuable company on earth in 2012.

As ad agency creative director, Ken Segall played a key role in Apple’s resurrection, helping to create such critical marketing campaigns as “Think Different” and naming the iMac.

This book makes you a fly on the wall inside a conference room with Steve Jobs, and on the receiving end of his midnight phone calls. You’ll understand how his obsession with Simplicity helped Apple perform better and faster, sometimes saving millions in the process.

Segall brings Apple’s quest for Simplicity to life using fascinating (and previously untold) stories from behind the scenes. Through his insight and wit, you’ll discover how companies that leverage this power can stand out from competitors—and individuals who master it can become critical assets to their organizations.

From Booklist
Segall worked with Steve Jobs for 12 years, as creative director at Apple and NeXT Computer, and also spent time as agency global creative director at Dell, IBM, Intel, and BMW. As the man who came up with the iconic iMac name, which launched one of the most successful product lines in history, Segall played a pivotal role in reviving Apple from near death. His close working relationship with Jobs allows him to provide insight into how Jobs’ obsession with simplicity became the driving force that informs every decision the company makes to this day, from product design to advertising, even down to the packing boxes. Segall contrasts this Apple mind-set with those of companies like Dell, Intel, and Microsoft, where complexity and a dizzying array of product choices only serve to confuse and distract customers. His recounting of high-level meetings, ad campaigns, and product-naming sessions reveals much about how Jobs’ unyielding, brutally honest approach pushed aside rivals, teams of lawyers, and everyone else who said it couldn’t be done to remake Apple into one of the most admired and valuable companies in the world. --David Siegfried

Review
“A blueprint for running a company the Steve Jobs way . . . should be required reading for anyone interested in management and marketing.”

—The Times (London)

“Gets inside Apple’s branding and marketing to explain its directness and power.”

—Financial Times

“Required reading.”

—The Observer

“Ken Segall has literally captured lightning in a bottle. Insanely Simple reveals the secret of Steve Jobs’s success with such clarity, even we non-geniuses can make use of it. Ken shows us how to cut through the cobwebs of fuzzy thinking, bureaucracy and mediocrity, and clearly see what’s most essential—and therefore most important.”

—Steve Hayden, legendary Apple creative director, author of the “1984” Super Bowl commercial

About the Author

Good Steve stories but too much filler material
By John Chang
This book needs a dose of its own medicine. The previously unpublished stories about Steve Jobs and Apple are real gems. But in much of the rest of the book, the author mostly invokes a silly narrative of battle between Simplicity and Complexity and falls back to insipid conclusions such as "Simplicity attracts" and "Simplicity has universal appeal". Well, of course. We don't need the author to persuade us of that.

The author compares Apple to companies like Dell and Intel, which have confusing product portfolios and marketing messages. But why do they? The author credits Steve's direct involvement in the creative process and lack of patience for big meetings and formal presentations. He explains that in a good working relationship, both sides are upfront and don't withhold problems from each other, and this creates the best results. Beyond that, there's not much more insight or deep ruminations about the nature of simplicity, which I would have appreciated. I know from experience [I worked at Apple during the second Steve era] that simplicity is rarely just a matter of wielding the Simple Stick, as the author seems to suggest. (Even when it is, it sure helps to be the CEO.)

I can imagine this book started out as a personal collection of Steve stories--for which I would have gladly given 5 stars. At some point, some publisher or marketing person probably decided that this book wouldn't appeal to the masses unless it were written as a management book, so as it stands, this book also tries to dispense business advice. A Steve quote (ironically, included in this book) comes to mind: "Get rid of the crappy stuff and focus on the good stuff."

"I would give my life for simplicity on the other side of complexity." Oliver Wendell Holmes
By Robert Morris
As Hannibal Lector explains to Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs, the Roman emperor and philosopher, Marcus Aurelius, endorsed the idea of focusing on the essence of a subject. The French later formulated the concept of the prcis. Still later, Oliver Wendell Holmes observed, "I would not give a fig for simplicity on this side of complexity but I would give my life for simplicity on the other side of complexity." All this serves to create a context, a frame of reference, for Ken Segall's brilliant analysis of what drove Steve Jobs to create an insanely great company that continues to produce insanely great products.

As Segall explains, "Simplicity doesn't spring to life with the right combination of molecules, water, and sunlight. It needs a champion - someone who's willing to stand up for its principles and strong enough to resist the overtures of Simplicity's evil twin, Complexity. It needs someone who's willing to guide a process with both head and heart." These are among the passages, themes, and concepts that caught my eye throughout Segall's lively and eloquent narrative:

o Standards Aren't for Bending (Pages 15-16)
o Small Groups = Better [Collaborative] Relationships (35- 38)
o The Perils of Proliferation (52-54)
o Thinking Different vs. Thinking Crazy (74-77)
o Simplicity's Unfair Advantage (93-95)
o Never Underestimate the Power of a Word (123-125)
o Death by Formality (132-135)
o Technology with Feeling (138-140)
o Ignoring the Naysayers: Inventing the Apple Store (180-184)

I have read all of the books written about Steve Jobs and Apple and reviewed most of them. In my opinion, with the exception of Walter Isaacson's definitive biography, none provides a more thorough explanation of Jobs's values, standards, and motivations than does this one. As Segall suggests, Jobs's greatest achievement is that he "built a monument to Simplicity."

As Jobs invariably had the last word at the conclusion of conversations and meetings, it seems appropriate that he also have the last word now:

"Simplicity can be harder than complex. You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end, because once you get there, you can move mountains."

Substance-free book full of unthinking adulation of Steve
By Vaddadi Kartick
I picked up this book with high expectations, but once I read half-way through, I was impatiently waiting for the end, and was relieved when I finished it.

Much of the book is unthinking adulation of Steve. I like and respect Steve as much as anyone, but I don't want read 200 pages of what comes off as a somewhat unthinking worship of the man. There's little new here for someone who has followed Steve's life, or read his stories, or read Walter Isaacson's book (which I recommend over this one any day). Speaking of which, there's none of the criticism of Steve that "Jobs" had, without which this book ends up sounding like one-sided fan worship, and not insightful at that, either.

The book has a little too much of "us vs them" undertones for my taste, as if it's from an Apple fanboy blog like Daring Fireball or Marco. By all means, point out where other companies fail, but don't be so disdainful of other companies.

Most of the chapters contain little substance and could just as well be expressed in a single page. The conclusion, where the author summarizes each chapter in half a page, is perhaps the most interesting part of the book. But even that was too long, to be honest.

The other flaw with this book (and I read this criticism elsewhere) is that it chooses one theme -- simplicity -- and attributes all of Steve and Apple's successes to it, in the typical MBA style. This is a stretch. One could just as well credit any of the other gifts Steve had for this -- one could image books titled High Standards, Taste, An Eye For Detail, How to Inspire People, etc.

Some of the author's conclusions are also open to debate with the passage of time and change of market conditions. For example, the author says that the iPhone and iPad are so successful in the market because of simplicity. But remember that the book was released a couple of years back. Now, I have to disclose that I work for Google, but since Android outsells iOS in both phones and tablets, and Samsung's satisfaction ratings exceeded the iPad's, and Samsung was more profitable than Apple, does it mean that simplicity doesn't work after all? This is the problem with the kind of facile analysis the author does.

Finally, the author is an ad man. So it's not surprising that he doesn't have much insight into the hardware, software or user experience design at Apple, and how they have able to build such great products. If you're looking for that, look elsewhere.

As a final note, the books covers little of what makes Apple (as opposed to Steve) able to do what it did. When it does cover Apple, it paints a picture of a politics-free utopia. Maybe that's true at the CEO level, with whom the author interacted a lot, but given that the company employs thousands of people, that's hardly a complete picture. What's unique about Apple itself -- its processes, values, the way it's managed, etc? The book doesn't say.

"I suspect the real breakthroughs in our understanding of consciousness are going to come from an entirely different direction. That direction, controversially, has to do with psychedelics - which, as many of the contributors to The Divine Spark argue, offer spectacular potential for the investigation of the "hard problem" of consciousness." (Graham Hancock, from the Introduction). In The Divine Spark, bestselling author Graham Hancock brings us a ground breaking collection of the latest thinking on consciousness and psychedelics. Graham has been writing and speaking about this to audiences worldwide, including a controversial TedX talk on ayahuasca and DMT, which received well over a million views on YouTube. Combining the wisdom of leading minds, The Divine Spark illuminates the topic like never before, with a particular focus on the use of psychedelics to open up the realm of the supernatural. The book unveils fresh theories on the relation of psychedelics to domains such as creativity, the survival of life on planet earth, interspecies communication, medicine and drug research, and many more. Contributors include: Mike Alvernia, Russell Brand, David Jay Brown, Paul Devereux, Rick Doblin, Nassim Haramein, Martina Hoffman, Don Lattin, Eduardo Luna, Dennis McKenna, Thad McKraken, Rak Razam, Gabriel Roberts, Thomas B. Required college book. A different style than I'm used to.
By Poznog
I had to have this book for a college level English class and honestly I thought it was just alright. The way it teaches is very different than any other English books I've ever had. That can be a pro and a con. At times it got me to think outside of the box while others it confused me.

Taking Turns: Stories from HIV/AIDS Care Unit 371 (Graphic Medicine), by MK Czerwiec

In 1994, at the height of the AIDS epidemic in the United States, MK Czerwiec took her first nursing job, at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, as part of the caregiving staff of HIV/AIDS Care Unit 371. Taking Turns pulls back the curtain on life in the ward.

A shining example of excellence in the treatment and care of patients, Unit 371 was a community for thousands of patients and families affected by HIV and AIDS and the people who cared for them. This graphic novel combines Czerwiec’s memories with the oral histories of patients, family members, and staff. It depicts life and death in the ward, the ways the unit affected and informed those who passed through it, and how many look back on their time there today. Czerwiec joined Unit 371 at a pivotal time in the history of AIDS: deaths from the syndrome in the Midwest peaked in 1995 and then dropped drastically in the following years, with the release of antiretroviral protease inhibitors. This positive turn of events led to a decline in patient populations and, ultimately, to the closure of Unit 371. Czerwiec’s restrained, inviting drawing style and carefully considered narrative examine individual, institutional, and community responses to the AIDS epidemic—as well as the role that art can play in the grieving process.

Deeply personal yet made up of many voices, this history of daily life in a unique AIDS care unit is an open, honest look at suffering, grief, and hope among a community of medical professionals and patients at the heart of the epidemic.

Review

“MK Czerwiec’s tales of her nursing work on an AIDS unit chart a remarkable episode in the history of medicine. It’s a time of staggering loss but also remarkable change. Through the lives and deaths of individual patients, written and drawn in documentary detail, we see the power dynamic between doctor and patient begin to shift. When cure is not an option, care takes on a new meaning.”

—Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home

“Taking Turns is an important work that takes the field of graphic medicine in new directions, both in terms of its object—the philosophy and practices of a clinical unit dedicated to the care of people with AIDS in a particular place and historical moment—and its approach—drawing on the comic artist’s own experience as a nurse on the unit as well as her interviews with other practitioners and patients.”

—Lisa Diedrich, author of Indirect Action: Schizophrenia, Epilepsy, AIDS, and the Course of Health Activism

“Taking Turns bears important witness to a specific moment in the history of HIV/AIDS through the testimony of caregivers, patients, and volunteers. MK Czerwiec’s story also issues a gracious challenge: knowing that we all live in vulnerable bodies, knowing that we will all ‘take turns’ needing others and being needed, how can we make this one life we have meaningful? This luminous graphic novel models how we can start: through creativity, community, generosity, and vulnerability.”

—Ann Fox, Davidson College

Excellent graphic novel...
By Jill Meyer
"Taking Turns: Stories from HIV/AIDS Care Unit" is a graphic work by MK Czerwiec that describes her time working as a nurse in a dedicated AIDS unit at Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago. It is as much a story about the staff members and the volunteers as much as it is about the patients. The ward was most active during the years that an AIDS diagnosis meant certain death to those who contracted it. As the new protease inhibitors were developed in the mid-1990's, that death sentence was lessened and AIDS became for most a treatable disease. The AIDS ward, so busy in the 1980's and 1990's basically closed-up-shop and the patients went to the cancer wards if they needed treatment.

What are graphic novels? According to Wikipedia, "A graphic novel is a book made up of comics content. Although the word 'novel' normally refers to long fictional works, the term 'graphic novel' is applied broadly and includes fiction, non-fiction, and anthologized work." I think this definition is important because more books are being published as "graphic" and the difference between a "written" book - particularly a memoir, as Czerwiec's work is considered - and a graphic is the intensity of the ideas being displayed by having both a written and drawn text. What MK Czerwiec writes and illustrates in "Taking Turns" brings the horrors of the illness, as well as the love and hope both given and received to the patient and his care givers.

"Taking Turns" is not a great work of art, but it is an honest - and loving - look at a hard period of time for many, many people.

Beautifully written and extremely moving
By ALS
Beautifully written and extremely moving. The story centers on a nurse's experience on an AIDS ward at the height of the AIDS epidemic. But the story reaches beyond these specific circumstances and explores how caregivers, friends, family, confront the death and dying of loved ones with a terminal diagnosis (which HIV was at that time), the different ways we grieve and how such experiences alter us forever.

Laughing and crying by page one.
By Sbrzweig
Beautiful, efficient writing and drawing tell this surprising inside story of life, yes, LIFE, in an AIDS unit at the height of the epidemic. A rookie nurse experiences the breakdown of barriers between patients and staff that happen when the professionals can't cure, but can offer real connection. Our hero undergoes her own seismic shift in the ensuing tale of love, loss and creativity, which results in this book, and much more.

Value for money - Applicable tips - Evidence-based approach
By Dikaios Voudigaris
Great book for people who are looking for real-life, applicable tips on how to actually lose weight. The fact that makes this book so great is that the tips are in an easy-to-digest language but still based on peer-reviewed science. Many books out there will promise outrageous things and deliver few results if any. Most of them are theoretical and don't help the reader to take the next step into implementing the knowledge she/he has spent her/his money on. This book does exactly the opposite! Best value for money loss weight book out there!

Very good and practical
By Toni
What I like about the book is the no bulls*** approach. Nobody is selling any supplements and everything is written plain and simple so everybody can understand it. At the same time everything is based on science and referenced to scientific papers. What especially resonated with me were the tips how to implement the theory into the practice without becoming to stressed about it. In my opinion one of the best (can be done in real life) weight loss books.
