Can create a really useless half-baked knowledge...

Half knowledge is more dangerous to use than no knowledge. The book calls out specific algorithms (k-means, etc) on sample data sets and attempts to showcase how these could be applied to real-world use cases in the world of medicine. This is very similar to a whole lot of "data scientists" being produced by learning how to apply a tool and an algorithm while completely missing the need to "reason / analyze / infer / remove bias / ..." to make sense of the output. How do you know that there is a different model that could do better than this one? There is no such context provided to compare models, reason the output, etc Not impressed, any "cookbook" of this sort unfortunately dilutes the body of knowledge and creates more "cooks" who could spoil the broth....

About the Author
Mary Ehrenworth is coauthor of Pathways to the Common Core (with Lucy Calkins and Christopher Lehman). She is Deputy Director of Middle Schools at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Columbia University. Excellent, practical arts integration resource

This book was exactly what I was looking for. As an advocate for integrating the arts into the academic curriculum, it is common to find books that talk about why to do so without adequately explaining how! This book does both. Ehrenworth provides unique structures for marrying the visual arts and literature. While I agree with another reviewer that the specific activities in the book are best suited for grade 6- 12, I absolutely believe the underlying structures can be used at any grade level. You have to look beyond the specific lesson and take the idea. For instance, in one lesson sequence Ehrenworth suggests that students draw historical, cultural artifacts as a way to truly "see" them. She then uses that experience as a springboard to an imaginative writing exercise in which students enter that culture and "tell its story." Fantastic! If you are someone who strives to integrate the arts into your teaching, you'll want this book on your shelf!

Great combination of theory and practice!

As the author says:

A common experience for teachers and graduate students... is that we read the ideas of philosophers, we come to care about these ideas, but we still need to articulate what these philosophical endeavors will mean in our teaching. (p. 3)

That is indeed a very real problem, especially to a theory junkie like myself! This book combines transformational pedagogical theory along with really clear examples of how to actually make arts central to curriculum. She gives specific examples combining writing and visual arts but manages to not seem like a "recipe" book spoonfeeding method to teachers.

I really like this book and I'm sure I'll refer to it often through the years.

Great overview!

I consider myself a beginner and this book really helped me get me up and running on designing web sites. Each section is to the point and doesn't assume too much, which is perfect for me. The chapters about HTML and CSS were invaluable. It could have used a chapter on designing web graphics, so I just use GRSites for that which a lot a people seem to swear by. I found going thru the book for hours, and learning new things in an enjoyable and organized way, the author definitely writes well. Great stuff!

Effective skills builder for web authors

Karl Stolley's "How To Design and Write Web Pages Today" is a good, solid introduction to fundamentals of web page authoring. It's a collection of tools and a downloadable template which, when worked through by anyone with the must fundamental personal computer experience, a good foundation of page authoring skills and items of interest.

There just aren't enough of this kind of book these days - a simple, focused guide teaching one practical computer skill. If you know someone who continually talks about wanting to get into web development someday, this is a basic skills book they should have and work through with the downloadable Rapid Prototyping Kit (a shell of pages and sheets and javascript files) which the author maintains at his website.

HTML 5 may replace some XHTML coding, but the basic principles which a reader of this book will work through will help them engage with HTML 5 or older languages.

For experienced developers: I found it useful for reviewing and updating my site template toolbox. Might work for you too.

Good attempt but still needs improvement.

Book is ok to read.But unlike Javed Ahmed Ghamidi,DR Shehzad writing style is not impressive and there are lots of "IFs" and "BUTs"remains in my mind after finishing this book.I must acknowledge here that those questions addressed in this book are most common question in the mind of any muslim with no answer anywhere.We might need revised version of this book.Download it ,its not that expensive and you will get few answers if not all.

This is a very important book. Required reading, regardless of the nature of your religious views, or whether they exist or not.

Islam is one of the most talked about and least understood subjects. Islam is rich in history, theology, tradition, literature, and practices that it is a challenge to grasp it on a cursory level. Any careful reader of Gospels would notice the evolution in story of Jesus (PBUH), how much of that is "historically" factual or was in fact the true message of Jesus (PBUH) - This subject has been debated forever and scholars have attempted to unleash the "original" truth. Islam is no exception! Dr. Shehzad Saleem, in his marvelous scholarship, attempts to distill the "true message of Islam" from "traditions", either misconstrued or added later to the Islamic literature.

Armstrong's second biography of Islam's prophet is lucid and stylish, never condescending. It puts the best face possible on its subject. The Muhammad it projects gave his followers "a mission: to create a just and decent society, in which all members were treated with respect." Moreover, Armstrong's Muhammad behaved justly and decently while he lived, though perhaps a bit according to the stringent standards of Arab culture at the time. He taught tolerance toward Jews and Christians. Never mind--Armstrong doesn't--about denials of civil equality to non-Muslims and fulminations about them as "infidels." The Jewish clan whose men were exterminated after a particular battle? It wasn't that they were Jews but that they were traitors, and it wasn't Muhammad who decided they should be executed. The fact that, after declaring that Muslim men could have no more than four wives, Muhammad himself exceeded the limit? Hey, a leader has to make alliances with other groups. A nicely written book, but don't let it be the only biography of Muhammad you read. Ray Olson

What a fabulous piece of research and writing! Reading this book has expanded my understanding of Islam and the Prophet in huge ways, far beyond the fear-producing aspects promoted so often these days and to which I'd reluctantly fallen prey. How can anyone have real knowledge of the historical record and not realize that Muhammad's words for his people have broad applicability to many of the social problems that face us now in the western world? Karen Armstrong's book is a blessing for those who have the willingness to read it. This book has the ability to open minds and hearts to the beauty and truth at the Source of one of the world's great religions. Thank you, Karen.

good and bad

This book is now a bit out of date, but is still worth reading. It was something of a ground-breaking book when it was published (early 80's) but now seems somewhat simple compared to more sophisticated treatments of the same problems. These later books, however, largely build from Beitz, so this criticism should be taken in this light. The attack on "Realism" is the best part of the book. The attacks on nationalism and communitarianism are also worth-while though the positive theory offered in their place is clearly under-theorized and not, I think, satisfactory in the end. The worst part of the book is the attempt to "globalize" Rawls in a way that clearly doesn't work and shows a pretty serious (though very common) misunderstanding of what Rawls is up to. Finally, the almost total lack of discussion of problems relating to democracy, self-determination, and legitimacy is pretty surprising and a serious short-comming. It's worth reading the book (it's an enjoyable read) but the short-commings should be kept in mind.

Actually Beitz isn't a communitarian (Walzer is); he's a cosmopolitan. He argues against communitarians (he calls them "morality of states" theorists). But anyway I agree with the first reviewer--this book is great!! Beitz presents an airtight argument, adressing counter arguments on all levels. Although I don't entirely agree with Beitz, his argument is compelling--read this book with Walzer to contrast the perspectives.

I understand the criticisms

I read a lot of the negative reviews for this book and I completely understand and even agree with some of the criticisms. Since the author is Christian, there is a lot of talk about each gender's place in the relationship, which will obviously irritate a lot of modern, liberal-minded people. I consider myself such a person and don't believe in the rigid gender stereotypes that this book heavily advocates. It lists affection as the primary female need and not as a male need, whereas I would put that onto one of my five primary needs as well. He also lists "attractive spouse" as one of the primary male needs, but I know plenty of women who would put that as one of their primary needs.

So, that being said, the author says lots of things that are on people's minds but are afraid to admit. Yes, attraction is a need in a relationship, and many marriages have fallen apart because one person in the marriage has decided that they don't need to take care of their physical appearance once married. This is true even if we really want to believe that people should love each other for what's on the inside. And yes, oftentimes women want men to be able to make enough money to support the family. I know that female independence has seen a lot of traction since the 70's, but it's going to take more than 40 years to completely break the societal tendencies that have been the norm for the past 10,000 years.

As much as I don't want to agree with the guy, there were a number of times in the book where he was saying exactly what I was feeling, and there were also a number of instances in talking with my girlfriend where I definitely saw the relation to what he was saying with how I wasn't taking care of certain needs of hers. So, it's definitely a useful book with a lot of truth in it, and if anything will have you thinking more about the needs of your significant other, since they often times do not match up with your own.

With all of the useful concepts in the book, I feel that the rigid Christian stereotypes come off as a hindrance to getting the full message across to certain people. The only thing this book really needs is a re-write to remove gender stereotypes and just focus on the primary needs of individuals and let the reader figure out what their needs are, because the write-ups on the needs themselves are usually pretty accurate.

I'd also like it if the author would remove the marriage centric language. This book is good for anybody who is in a long term meaningful relationship, not just the ones who are in a 5 year marriage, but again, because of the ingrained Christian ideals, the author makes it seem like marriage is the only relationship worth working on.

I really like this book

I really like this book. Definitely a must-read book for those that are seeking to get married or for married couples. The book perfectly and logically highlights the needs of men and women, so that each husband and wife knows how to please the other. However, I do not agree that book uses the negative tone of "if you don't do this, you will cheat!" I feel like every single point the author makes alludes to not causing your spouse to cheat on you. I think the book should be less negative about cheating and more positive about making your spouse happy.

I love the revised version the best have all 3 copies and they are very similar but the revised is more for todays day in age. :o)
I've been married for 17 plus years and just now read this book and loved it so much that I purchased it for my entire family and will be giving it to all newly weds as well. Whether you have a fantastic marriage or on the brink of divorce this book is for you! I don't love the "affair proof" in the title part because it seems as if there is an issue even if there's not but that's it. I love his website that has so much free and good information on it too! I've read tons of marriage books and self help books but none of them actually address what your husband's needs are and what your needs as a wife are so despite every effort you could just be not doing what they need the most to make them the most happy and vice versa. I thought that after 18 years with my husband dating for a year then marriage for 17 plus that I knew his needs and wants but I was actually wrong! Crazy right!!?!! You might not even know what your needs are and this book will definitely help you figure that out and start making your marriage completely awesome!!! I also highly recommend the dvd and the guide for it! The dvd goes over the top 10 needs in 6 - 20 minute intervals or segments so you if you can't get hubby or wife to read the book you can get them to watch the 20 min videos and that alone is going to help tremendously! You could do it all in one or two evenings or break it into 6 weeks. If you do nothing else at all and do not buy this book I would suggest that you go to the website and click on the questionnaires and do the one that is for needs have yourself and your spouse fill it out to at least identify each other's top 5 needs. The website is free, no memberships no subscriptions unless you want to participate in forums. He also has a free radio show and app. He the author and his wife have been married for over 50 years! I really can't say enough good things about this book but I will say that one of you if not both of you have to want your relationship to work for this book to work for you. If neither of you is willing to make some changes and put the other person first then no one will change and no one's needs will be met. Even if only one of you is willing and the other one is still there but doesn't care anymore really I believe this book will work for you! You will be meeting their needs and they will have no choice but to feel happy seriously I know that might sound too easy or corny but it's true. I love love love this book and am so very happy I found it! It's made a world of difference and happiness in my life. I plan on getting some of his other books now :o)
