And they can compare these vessels in annual directories of sailing manufacturers and distributors. Eager vendors will readily send sales literature on request.

But what of those of us who have elected to sail those boats euphemistically referred to as gently used or previously sailed? These boats, of course, are affordable, often well-equipped, and typically in sailaway condition without extensive commissioning. So how do you make comparisons and determine which of these boats is right for you?

John Vigor has selected 20 from a vast field of older sailboats and offers comprehensive reviews and rating scales for comparison. His criteria for selection were that the boat must be seaworthy enough to go offshore and small enough to be easily handled by two. The boats he selected range from 20 to 32 feet.

Lin and Larry Pardey, who have circumnavigated twice in sailboats less than 30 feet in length, argue that small and simple boats are better for voyaging couples. They have noted that large vessels are often the cause of abandoned cruising dreams. Theyre too expensive and thus steal too much from the cruising couple without the assistance of additional crewmembers or power devices that can fail at the most critical moment. Larger, more complicated, sailboats have more systems that break, testing the skills of even the handiest. Good starting point

This book is an excellent starting point for those trying to wade through the ocean of sailboats available on the used market, who want to get "the most bang for their buck." The reader should come away with at least several favories, allowing him/her to narrow the search for the "perfect" boat. At the same time, other boats will be stricken from the list of possibilites because of information contained in this book. It is aimed at the person who wants to get out there and sail on the best boat possible, but must shop carefully due to budget considerations. The short descriptions and comparisons of the boats are helpful, as are the details of the "known weaknesses," and interviews with owners. I just wish the book could have profiled more than 20 sailboats, I hated to reach the end. As a companion to this book, I would recommend "Inspecting The Aging Sailboat" by Don Casey. I would buy this book again.

A great place to start a boat search

I liked this book and I probably would like John Vigor if I ever meet him. He has an easy-to-read conversational style. The best aspect of each of these boat reviews is seeing how an experienced sailor looks at and evaluates a boat's design and how it is constructed. J.V.'s approach is a valuable tool to apply to any boat you may be considering for offshore work.
For those of you who haven't seen the book yet a word of caution - there are no photographs of any boats in the book. All the visuals are line drawings and sail and 'floor' plans. In addition, I found one glaring error in the chapter on the Cape Dory 25D. The line profile drawing is for (I believe) the Cape Dory 25 - a distinctly different boat. The other drawings for this boat are definitly not of a Cape Dory 25D either.
These are all interesting boats - several have been single handed around the world, - one set a speed record for crossing the Atlantic. Of course they aren't the only boats capable of crossing oceans. You can expand your search by looking for boats by the same designer and / or the same builder. Sometimes it might pay to look to larger or smaller boats in a particular line. Find owners on the web and shoot them an email. Many people are glad to share sailing experiences. That reminds me that one of the best parts of this book is the Owner's Experiences section.

Screen the Reviewers, Please......

I've read Vigor's book, I've bought an Albin Vega within the past 3 weeks, I'm no circumnavigator (and never will be), but now have my boat of choice for the duration. I at least know if I do want to go offshore, my boat, properly prepared, can do it.
The rater that speaks of Vigor's head being 'up his stern' should lighten up or, at least, give some reasoning for his unsubstantiated comments.
Obviously, if your heading offshore you probably won't just read Vigor's book (or choose a Cal 20 or Catalina 27) but the book sure narrows the choices to make. And, of course, Vigor's choices aren't the only ones. As many raters said, 'a good starting point' and, contrary to captain 'up his stern' and his innuendo's, there's not a boat in Vigor's 20 choices that are inherently 'bad'.
Sorry to Capt. A. Spears and his review which was, nevertheless, helpful; Tanya A. sailed around the world in a Contessa 26 not a Bayfield 25. I only know that 'cause I read her book and once lusted after Contessa 26/Bayfield 25 vessels; only to choose, in my opinion, an even better boat with my 'new' Albin Vega 27.
I believe Vigor's book, for those contemplating serious, offshore voyages, should only be the beginning of the research; but a great place to start.

He has written a fortnightly column in the Financial Times since 2007 and for 12 years before that wrote a popular weekly column in The Independent. Top asset gatherers contradict one another, and themselves

The many faces of money management

A 1948 Academy Award-winning film popularized the slogan "There are eight million stories in the Naked City", and after reading the eclectic "Professional Investor Rules", I'm beginning to think there are almost as many stories about how to manage money properly.

Value and growth, momentum and macro-geography, market-timing and voodoo superstition; all these major investment strategies and themes are on display, and many more to boot, and all come bearing their own often-tortured metaphors to convey their point.

What's more, it seems the pacing and style of the book change along with the advice-giver: while some of the entries follow the books eponymous "rule" format for organizing their thoughts, others involve myths, lengthy prose paragraph-laden essays and headings with sub-headings. Some have charts, and some do not.

One things consistent, at least-- all the advisors profiled contradict one another at some point or other, and some even manage to contradict themselves in their own sections.

But it's got this going for it, which is nice

Those are some of the glaring cons to the book. It's not entirely without it's pros, however.

One of the things I liked about the book is, ironically, also one of its flaws-- the great variety of personas. They run the gamut from the known to the unknown, the mainstream to the contrarian, the sell-side to the buy-side. This book is published by a UK outfit (Harriman House), which means many of the professional soothsayers will be unfamiliar to US audiences, but it also means you get a selection of icons from the Commonwealth and former British territories (such as Hong Kong and other Asia-based managers) that you'd likely never hear about on CNBC or other American publishing sources.

Following this contrarian inversion theme, I liked that all the phony fuzzy thinkers were right there next to the sharper pencils because it made their baloney that much more rotten. I think this is a great service for an uninformed investor picking up this book. If they had come across some of the more foppish money dandies on their own, elsewhere, they'd be liable to get taken in and swindled like the thousands of others who sustain such frauds. But at least in this case you've got a go-go glamour guy saying no price is too high for a growing company right next to a value guy warning that that way lies the path to certain, eventual doom.

And maybe this isn't a big deal to others but I like the packaging on this hardcover edition I've got-- it's truly a HANDy size, the fonts and color scheme are modern and eye-catching and the anecdotal organization of the book makes it easy to pick up and put down without feeling too upset over whether or not you've got the time to commit to a serious read right then.

Here are five of my favorite ideas from the book, along with the person(s) who said it:

--At any one time, a few parts of your portfolio will be doing terribly... focus on the performance of the portfolio as a whole (William Bernstein, Efficient Frontier Advisors)
--Far more companies have failed than succeeded (Marc Faber, The Gloom, Boom and Doom Report)
--Fight the consensus, not the fundamentals (Max King, Investec Asset Management)
--When someone says 'it's not about the money,' it's about the money (H.L. Mencken... consequently not actually a money manager and not alive, but it was quoted in one of the in-betweens spacing out the chapters)
--Academics never rescind papers and never get fired (Robin Pabrook and Lee King Fuei, Schroeders Fund, Asia)
Conclusion

Who is this book for? Accomplished, well-read pro-am investors will find nothing new here and much they disagree with, so I'd recommend such readers stay away. Someone completely new to investing and the money management industry might find the book valuable as a current snapshot of the gamut of strategic strains present in the money management industry.

Overall, while "Professional Investor Rules" has its moments, overall I came away less enthused than I did with Harriman House's earlier offering, "Free Capital", by Guy Thomas. For anyone looking to learn investing techniques from accomplished, self-made millionaires, that's the book I'd point them to-- the advice therein is worth multiples of that being given by the mass of asset gathering managers of OPM contained in this one.

Very Oriental In It's Views.

My notes on the first 50% of this book. It ties in with my review.

1.My first thought is that this is good editing, to put a fund of fund
manager after a manager who thinks you cannot beat an index fund.

2.I believe in inflation by my own definition. I define it as the cost of living
as tied to certain commodities such as clean water, sugar, milk,
electricity supply for a reasonable amount of the day excetera.

3.With competing visions of where profit is made in finance;
I cannot say what strong balance sheets and healthy dividend yield
mean empirically. This requires tenure and the ability to devote yourself
to long hours of research.

4.Gentleman is insulting so-called 'quant' funds.

5.Gentleman is saying that with 'quant' funds, in a market 'correction',
every fund's algorithm sells at the same time, flooding the market with
orders and hence, shutting down the exchange.

6.In theory, everyone should lose their money.

7.3-5 years is too short a time span to judge the performance of a
manager, as the text states.

8.Gentleman has to be commended; however he could have
hoarded gold bullion in a Swiss vault.

9.Prescriptive formula would take away the nerves when pulling the trigger;
however if the gentleman can take the stress of making decisions
under stress; then he should do this his own way.

10.What Buffett calls a toll bridge.

11.In short, if the law changes, everyone who counts on
IP protection is 'dead.'

12.In summary, apart from your 'core' business, become a bank; as every corporation is.

To be brusque, as a snob I did not see any 'dotcom' boom, but only media reporting of it.

MY REVIEW:

This book's grand concept is based on the Chinese concept of the world. That concept
being that water that is too pure has no fish. The editors do not assert that among
Efficient Market Theory, 'Quant' investing, blue chip, buy and hold; anything is
superior or even matters.

This book will be of value to you if you have slogged through 70-80 abstruse texts not just on investing,
but on Taoism and Chinese statecraft and also it's influence on Japan.

To conclude. Buy this book but work very, very hard to get your money out of it.

You won't believe how Diamond's daughter gets down.

OMG!! I had the pleasure of winning an advanced copy of Next Door Nymph 2 and your readers are in for a treat. Candice the daughter of Diamond is off the hook. I thought her mother was bad but got damn! Candice is worse than her mother. Some parts of the book I just could not read on the train due to those who like to read what your reading and the graphic nature this girl was getting down. One scene had a threesome and it will have your mouth hanging open. It had me blushing!!! The keyboard assassin definitely went hard in the lab for this one. The story kept me captivated from the beginning to the very end. The way you tied it all together at the end was crazy. Your readers are in for a real treat when this is released.

Candice is all grown up and attending college with her best friend Toi,Unfortunately the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.Candice suffers from the same sickness her mother Diamond suffered from in part 1,She too is a "Nympho".In book one those ways caught up to her mother.Will Candice have to pay for her and Diamond's freaky ways?or Can Candice right the wrongs her mother wasn't able to?Wow this book starts with a bang and ends with one as well.Drama,suspense and straight ratchetness occurs throughout this book,I couldn't put it down due to having the need to know what would happen next.The ending was shocking and jaw-dropping..Another great job CJ Hudson,I look forward to your next release.

Too hot for tv

Cj Hudson is an underrated beast! I thought part one was hot but part two started with a blaze! And the fire never went out. Not even at the end. These characters, especially Candice, were off the chain and so believable. A lot of twists in this tale of vengeance and betrayal. Let's not forget the hot,erotic sex scenes! If you like tales of vengeance blended with erotica then read this!

Extraordinary in helping both children and parents

I read this book as a child of divorce and it gave me incredible insights into what my parents went through in their divorce. It not only helped me understand all that happened when I was younger, but helped me understand a lot of what my parents went through.
If you are a parent who is getting or has gotten a divorce this book is vital to the well being of your child(ren). Unless you have come from a broken home you have no idea how impacting your divorce is on your children, even if you think they are coping well. I was the good child in my family, my parents always thought I was dealing with everything so well but inside I was dying and decaying away.
If you are an adult who's still going through the trauma of your parents divorce from when you were younger, then this book will help you as it helped me, to understand both your feelings and also what your parents went through.
I am a huge fan of Arch Hart, he thinks like me and writes in a way that I can understand. One of the best books I've read on men is his book "The Sexual Man" which is incredible in describing how we're made.
I finally found Arch's book "growing up divorced" which has been out of print and I look forward to reading that.

hit home like a sock in the jaw

granted, not every syllable hit me-no book will do that. but i really wish i had this book-or that this was out-when i was a lot younger. having been through three divorces by the time i was 15 (my mom being the main person) i feel that it has royally affected me, to the point that in my adulthood i act some of these things out. every single topic here i've experienced-from depression to anxiety to self-esteem issues. my feelings were never considered as far as arguments being in front of me, my isolation in my room for days sometimes(i was a good boy because i was in my room always doing stuff, or outside playing-alone. yeah, sure, that's healthy), my sadness, and the topper: the attitude of 'never mind your feelings-what about mine?'-being used as the sanctuary from the storm. granted, it is better for kids to not see their parents in constant negativity and conflict, so in that sense okay. but most divorces are hostile and the child's feelings are never considered. and yes, we carry on what we see to our adulthood-we do have memories. i feel that the reason i choose the wrong person in relationships is that i choose what i'm used 2, and it's not the divorces themselves but the attitudes that i had to live with all my life-it's what you are used 2. i have plenty of memories i'd love to delete from the harddrive inside my skull. message to couples on the borderline of their relationship: check your egos at the door, consider how your behavior is affecting your kids and change it-now! -if necessary, and consider how your attitudes will affect your kids 4 the rest of their lives.

Excellent Work

Ann Milner's review (below) is just, well, strange. Dr. Hart does not blame absent fathers. Instead, his point is one of what he says is a critical factor in helping children through divorce: consistency. Whenever possible, maintaining relationships, friendships, etc, is a key in helping children through this traumatic time. Clearly, Ann missed the context.

This is a hugely helpful book. I read it as part of a required text in a Master's counseling class. As a child of divorce (years ago), I wish this book had been around for my parents. It was healing, even for me, years later.

Getting a divorce? Have children? This should be required reading.

Quality with value

Those of you who are in school, know how terribly expensive most books are. But this one is worth every penny, and is actually much less compared to how extensive it is. I paid more for a flimsy lab manual. The authors could charge a lot more for this book. I bought it for an Intro to Occupational Therapy course. I was told by another student, that this book will be used for the entire Master's Program in some schools. It is well worth the investment. It looks a bit intimidating when you see how thick it is, but most chapters are short and sweet.

Best edition in a while

I found the "new" W&S very useful, both in the US and in Finland, where I am teaching for the semester. It has very good case studies, and the latest up to date information. Having seen the Jan Davis videos before, I know that students will find them very helpful. Dr. Gillen's contributions also add to the content in the text.
W&S continues to be the "bible" for occupational therapy education!

No page numbers!!! This is extremely disappointing because the only reason i bought the ebook was beacause it was cheaper. I use this for assigned readings for my classes in a MOT program. Some of the readings are just a couple of pages long. It takes me longer to find the section I need than to read it.
