But learning magic and wizardry are not as easy as Randal thought. "Potential" does not mean that he will pass, and wizards are forbidden to kill, lie, or use a weapon. Randal finds it unbearably difficult to do even the most basic magic. He throws himself into his studies... but just as everything seems to be turning for the better, he finds himself face-to-face with a hideous threat.
Randal is the ideal hero for any kid who has struggled in school, not through lack of effort but from lack of understanding; he's smart, brave, gutsy, and sweet. He's supported by the enigmatic wanderer Madoc, his cheerful friend Nicholas, and the ragged musician Elys.
The older wizards are well-portrayed, being stern but kindly, strict but not rigid; the Schola is likewise, a place of great learning and magic, but also incredibly difficult to get through. Writing is very good as well; Doyle/Macdonald don't talk down to their readers, or dumb things down with the assumption that the kiddies can't handle anything more complex. They also put forth the neglected idea that just because you do badly at studies doesn't mean you're stupid, and that such things can be overcome more often than not.
Many authors can't pull off trying to tell a story in fragments of six, seven, eight small books. The end results are often poorly written and horribly characterized. Garth Nix can pull it off, and so can Debra Doyle and James D. Macdonald. This book is both well-written and well-characterized, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

I want the Whole series. . .

In 6th grade I read my first of the Circle of Magic books, the School of Wizardry. It started me into realm of fire breathing dragons, arrogant wizards, and gallant knights. Here I was hiding the book under my notebook at school, because even then I felt embarrassed at the size and childness of the book. The books have the reading level set at the age of 9-12 and because of this many might look over them. Though these books inspired me as a youth to explore the wide variety of literature out there, I feel it can do the same for ANYONE. Debra Doyle has found a way to reach out to ALL audiences. The publicity was down, so thence the sales. But the books themselves are magnificent. As I have not so forcibly made my younger brother read them, he has become a fan at the age of 14. As he checked them out of my old Junior High, I got the chance to read them once more as a Senior in High School. Of course this time I didn't have to hide them, but flaunted them as the occasion permitted. Now this review is quickly becoming unhelpful, but the point I am trying to put across is that these books appeal to ALL ages. I love them. On my list are classics like The Hobbit, A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court, and the Wheel Of Time series. But the circle of magic (though somewhat adolescent) stand out among the best. I can't think of another book I would rather have my children read in the future, and for anyone with the love of fantasy and imagination.

I've read this whole series of books when I was much younger, from when Randal was first a squire in his kings court, to his adventures well beyond, I won't spoil it for you.
If you like fantasy books this is definetely a good read.
Randal starts out as a young squire in his kings court with his older brother Walter who is training to be a knight. Randal was dissatisfied with his potential future. When a master wizard visited the castle to give a display of some of magic's more flashier techniques, Randal ran away from home to pursue his life in magic, much to the dissatisfaction of his family. The author does a very good job at telling this tale.

Could really, really have used an editor

Some of the recipes look interesting. Duck confit, rabbit, goose eggs, some ingredients I wasn't expecting in a product support cookbook. It appears to have been written before the new wifi/app-enabled Anova cooker because it makes no mention of those features. As others have noted the editing is fairly poor in the kindle edition. For example: Chinese Crispy Pork Belly calls for: 2 steel or wood skewers, the use of which is not explained. There is literally no mention of skewering anything. It also calls for: 2 teaspoons of salt, 1 teaspoon of white pepper, 1 teaspoon of 5-spice powder,1 teaspoon of white pepper, and 3 tablespoons of white vinegar. You mix those dry spices together, so it is isn't clear why it doesn't just say 2 teaspoons of white pepper. I think maybe the recipe only needs 1 teaspoon of white pepper and the ingredient got pasted in twice. The vinegar is never mentioned again in the recipe, so when you are done cooking you have 3 tablespoons of vinegar on the counter just waiting for a purpose in life. The goose egg recipe instructs you to prepare a soft polenta, spoon it into a bowl, then top it with the soft cooked goose eggs and the crispy polenta (except there is no crispy polenta, the author appears to have spaced on the crispy fried pancetta mentioned earlier in the recipe and then simply dropped). Anyways, most of the book is like that. I began to wonder if a the ingredients repeated or simply dropped and cooking instructions for ingredients not listed must somehow form a puzzle that if it could be deciphered would lead to a great national treasure. Time was when no book went to print before being proofread, but now with ebooks publishers just assume they can correct the mistakes later. Except in this case they don't appear to be in a hurry to do so.

No indexing and some poor editing.

Basically the same book as the Foodsaver Sous-Vide Cookbook. This has the same author and poor editing. It also has mostly the same recipes. Also, both books have the same lack of direct link indexing. There are no links to individual recipes or even to individual chapters. You have to page through the entire book to find anything. Be sure to bookmark the chapters so that you can at least jump to them.

There is such tremendous value to this book. I like to collect cook books but I am finicky when choosing which ones to buy. I figure a book is "worth the price" if I find around five recipes I would actually make.

This book delivers in spades! I found myself bookmarking so often it looked more like the table of contents. I normally avoid writing reviews but I could not resist on this one. A must have for someone looking to start sous vide.

Kindle Edition not in Parallel

This review is specific to the Kindle Edition of this book.

As I child, I spoke German fluently, but over the years I have forgotten most of it. I bought this book for my Kindle because I thought that reading stories in German would be a good first step towards restoring my fluency, with the parallel text acting as "training wheels" for my vocabulary.

As of the time of this writing, the other reviews are universally positive. As they are all focused on the print edition, I believe that they are correct to rate this book highly: the stories are excellent. The translations are decent, and are supported by very good notes. If it weren't for the problems with the Kindle Edition, I would give this book at least four stars.

Unfortunately, this book was not well adapted to the Kindle. The value of a parallel text lies in the fact that it is, well, parallel: the two languages are side-by-side for easy comparison and reference. Unfortunately, this Kindle edition instead presents an entire story in German, followed by the entire story in English. In order to cross-reference between the two you have to manually page back and forth between the two versions. For the shorter stories this is only a minor inconvenience, but for the longer stories it becomes unbearably cumbersome. I would strongly recommend that the publisher modify the Kindle Edition of this book to provide some semblance of a parallel reading experience. The best solution would be to split the screen (either vertically or horizontally), but that might not be technically feasible within the constraints of the Kindle book format and software. Another solution would be to interleave the stories by paragraph: present the first paragraph in German, immediately followed by the same paragraph in English, then the second paragraph in German, etc. At the very least, take the text as it currently stands and add paragraph-by-paragraph hyperlinks back and forth between the English and German versions to make it easy to jump back and forth between the two versions.

If the Kindle Edition of this book is modified to provide a better parallel reading experience, then I will modify this review to reflect the change.

Decent collection

Pros
1. Parallel texts on pages facing each other makes it easy and fast practice reading.
2. The stories are literary and of interest to students of German literature. (They may be boring for some people, but I am a literature student.) As such, you will run across colloquial and dated phrases and grammar variations which will definitely help you get the sense of written German.
3. The book is small, light, and a reasonable length. I stick it in my backpack to carry to school.

Cons:
1. The translations are not *exactly* as literal as the book claims to be, but they are nonetheless extremely faithful and will help you figure out unfamiliar words and phrases without needing to go to a dictionary for one or two words.
2. The German and English pages don't *exactly* match up (sometimes the German for the bottom of an English translation is found on the top of the next page instead). It's usually only a sentence or two.

Other comments:
1. Good for an advanced intermediate (or just advanced) reader. One thing I tried early on was to read an entire page (then an entire story) in English, then go back and read the German again--that helps if you are just at the intermediate level and can't handle only German yet.

Excellent Language Tool

Short stories in both English and German help the reader gain foreign language skills. This book is laid out well, with English on the right and the German text on the left. This is the Level One book but that is not to say it is for beginners. While I think it would be useful to all German students on some level, students with at least intermediate skills would benefit the most. The stories are interesting and varied and while I believe it to be secondary to the books purpose, most readers will find at least one to their taste.

About the Author
Linda M James is a writer of novels, non-fiction books and screenplays. She has written two historical novels and also had many short stories and poems published. Her non-fiction books are called "How To Write Great Screenplays And Get Them Into Production" and "How To Write And Sell Short Stories." The latter book is being published later this year.

She was commissioned to write three screenplays in 2008/9:� "Young Ivanhoe", "Young Helen Of Troy" and "Jesus Christ: The Missing Years". They are all in pre-production. Linda also runs writing workshops in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, UK, where she now lives after living in Malta, Germany and Vienna for eleven years.

Great Screenwriting Book, Easy Reading

This book is excellent. I do not like printing that is sparse just to make pages. This book is printed that way which allows the reader to finish it quickly. Still, the book is excellent.
