Best beginners book in market!!

Sperling's book stands out as the most useful polymer science text, compiling essential elements of varied physical properties and behaviour. The third edition has up to date material on all aspects of polymer physics including chapters on polymer surfaces and interfaces as well as on multicomponent polymer systems and liquid crystalline polymers. In my opinion, as a beginners guide, the book is definitely outscores over all other texts in market including Billmeyer, Painter Coleman, Rodriquez, etc. The book also contains a good description of various polymer characterization techniques.
The material covered is adequate to provide basic information about each field in polymer physics, and the textbook has enough material to be useful for two or three courses. The author presents a lot of tables in the book, that succintly summarize important points related to that topic. Coupled with Strobl's book, which has slightly advanced description of polymer physics, and Doi's Introduction to polymer physics, which has mathematically intensive description of statistical mechanics of polymers, you have three texts to teach you essentially everything there is to know in Polymer Physics!! (Perhaps you can add a text for Polymer Rheology, say by Larson!)

Good Textbook, Better Reference

Like most textbooks, its verbose and hard to read at times. However, if one were to study polymers for more than just a course, it makes a handy reference tool unlike any other I or my friends have come across. Having this book for other courses would have been worth paying full price (but you don't have to) and I only wish I had come across it earlier.

Polymers are good

This book introduced me to physical polymer science. I have a strong interest in this field. The book is very informative but not easy to read. However, it is very helpful that key points in the chapters are depicted quite nicely by diagrams and graphs.

This is Herta’s debut novel. She tackles cyber bullying, which as a parent scares the hell out of me. Now this book is totally a novel but was a total educational book for me. I totally recommend parents to read this and start an open conversation with their children…. Isabel is a lawyer, a wife and a mother of a 14 year old and 10 year old... She is like every mother I know, she is trying to do it all and questions every decision she makes. ... Saving Phoebe Murrow was an amazing and heartbreaking story. I loved Phoebe and my heart broke for her. Herta’s writing was amazing, she really made me think. Bullying was one thing when I was in high school. It was notes and rumors and just mean girls you could kind of avoid….now a days cyber bullying is WOW..I have no words. The things that happened in this book at the hands of mean girls is terrifying. I highly recommend everyone to read this book and have a discussion with your children about kindness, let's end bullying….again I will get off my soap box. About the Author
Herta B. Feely is a writer and full-time editor. Her short stories and memoir have been published in anthologies and literary journals, including The Sun, Lullwater Review, The Griffin, Provincetown Arts, and Big Muddy. In the wake of the James Frey scandal, Feely edited and published the anthology, Confessions: Fact or Fiction? She was awarded the James Jones First Novel Fellowship and an Artist in Literature Fellowship from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities for The Trials of Serra Blue. She has also received an award from American Independent Writers for best published personal essay for a piece on immigration. In Saving Phoebe Murrow, Feely continues her commitment to activism on behalf of children. A graduate of UC Berkeley and Johns Hopkins University, Feely is the co-founder of Safe Kids Worldwide, an organization dedicated to saving children from unintentional injuries, the leading killer of children in the United States. A riveting story about adolescence, family and the consequences of a single act of cruelty.

“ Saving Phoebe Morrow,” takes us deep into the often fraught and risky world of teenage girls, viewed through a mother’s worried gaze. What does it mean to be a good mother, when the cruelty and betrayals of adolescence go to far? How do we keep our daughters from harm and how far should we intrude into their lives to do so? Herta Feely deftly pens a riveting story about a mother whose “ perfect life” threatens to unravel, in the wake of a cruel act of cyberbullying. That single thoughtless act unleashes a cascade of unexpected consequences for the whole family and beyond. From the first page, I couldn’t put this book down.

Your next book group book--especially if you are a parent!

I could recommend this book for anyone--it's suspenseful and a quick read, but I'd particularly recommend it for parents, as it deals with social media, and the new threats our children face that I had never really considered. It's set in the world of private-school Washington DC, so anyone with a connection to the DC area will enjoy the local culture and references. We get to view this world through the eyes of anxious parents--anxious for social status, popular kids, and loving relationships with their own (or other's!) spouses AND through the eyes of their teenage children just beginning high school. It kind of took me back to what it feels like to be 14 and how our inner voice is almost completely determined by our peer group. GREAT for book groups--especially moms and dads who want to gain insight into the minds of teens and to examine parental values--do we trust our kids and their friends? how do we set limits and discipline, while encouraging their budding individuality? is it possible to protect them from the minefield that is adolescence?

Comprehensive Purview Of the Fascinating 1960s!

Aging baby-boomers like myself can rest more easily; herein one discovers a wonderful effort, which succeeds marvelously in accurately and faithfully recounting and retelling the somewhat convoluted and always multi-currented tenor of the times for the 1960s. Given the massive neo-conservative effort to discredit the theoretical positions and social ethos of the sixties generation, it is terrific to have such a carefully researched and meticulously documented effort as is "The Columbia Guide To America In The 1960s" to give greater voice and renewed verve and credibility to the ideas and theoretical positions that arose from the ongoing new-left critique of mainstream society that emanated from the events of that storied decade. Authors David Farber and Beth Bailey are both academics with considerable expertise in the area of contemporary 20th century history, and this aplomb with the facts and the sense of the times is fascinating to plow through on both an intellectual and also an emotional level. This is scholarship well done!
It does one well to remember that the sixties decade and what came out of it are both subjects of serious disagreements as well as continuing controversy, given the attempt by the right wing to define the ideas stemming from those times as bogus and discredited. Therefore, making sense of all that is brought back to the surface in this book represents a considerable effort, but it is hard to deny such an effort to make sense of a time with so many crosscurrents and so much social, cultural, and political turbulence is well worth the effort. Therefore, the book is organized around several different perspectives and approaches. In the first section, we are presented with a well-developed and intricately organized narrative that superbly covers the waterfront of the era's most significant events, policies, and changes. The second part of the book is organized around ten different essay efforts by well-regarded contemporary historians on various salient aspects of the decade, ranging from the counterculture, the civil rights movement, the sexual revolution, and of course, the war in Vietnam.
The net effect of the combined first and second sections is to give us a much more comprehensive and detailed understanding of both the issues and events on the one hand, and how they fit into the mosaic of the sixties, on the other hand. Subsequent section also add to the overall contribution of the book, by giving us shorter essays on other aspects of the era, subjects of particualr interest to each of the authors, and a terrific extended bibliography for those of us interested in further exploring the eddies and currents of various aspects of the decade in question. It fairly well smashes revisionist interpretations of the era into smithereens by exposing them for the solipsistic efforts at refashioning the truth that they are, and does so while educating and entertaining us on an number of levels at one. This is a great book, and one I can recommend to anyone interested in learning more about the most fascinating decade of the 20th century. Enjoy!

Excellent Survey of a Most Eventful Decade

Whether you lived through it, grew up in it, are studying it, or are simply curious about what your grandparents and parents were up to, you'll find no more comprehensive and thoughtful compendium to the 1960s.

Farber and Bailey divide the book into sections that each serve to give you a thorough understanding of the major issues of the time.

They begin with a very brief history of the decade and then move on to longer essays delineating the decade's hot buttons. These include John Kennedy's election and leadership up to his assassination; the civil rights movement, encompassing its origins, the protests, and the resulting civil rights laws; The Great Society, along with civil rights legislation, the centerpiece of Lyndon Johnson's domestic policy; the Vietnam War, from origins that predated U.S. involvement to its end under Richard Nixon; the polarization of society during the decade, something that still stands out in the minds of these who lived through the 1960s; the culture of the Sixties, including youth and African-American movements; and the change that came with the election of Nixon, as well as a brief recounting of the Watergate break in and its effect on the American psyche.

Next, they provide a series of articles, the majority contributed, that cover critical topics and that outline the scholarly interpretation of events. You'll find the evolution of interpretations particularly enlightening, as well as what the authors, historians, and journalists they review view as the lasting effects of: the upheaval of Jim Crow and the civil rights struggle; the nature of the new left; the ongoing results of The Great Society; the meaning and results of urban uprisings; the contentious issues still surrounding the Vietnam War and affecting policy to this day; what the women's movement and sexual revolution meant and means for people of different economic groups; an exploration of the famous counterculture; the political conservatism of the times and the Silent Majority.

About the Author
Anil Babu Ankisettipalli has more than 17 years of experience in developing application and technology software. Since 2010, he has designed and developed SAP HANA applications and products using predictive analytics, machine learning, and data mining algorithms. At SAP Labs, he uses data science and big data technologies within the SAP HANA platform to solve critical problems of SAP customers.

Hansen Chen is an experienced database expert and graduate of Peking University in China. In 2006, he joined Business Objects, where he worked on Web Intelligence and the semantic layer. He joined the SAP Strategic Customer Engagements group as a senior specialist in 2011, and worked with customers in co-innovation projects on top of the SAP HANA platform. His specific area of SAP HANA focus is on modeling and performance tuning.

Pranav Wankawala has more than 12 years of experience in software engineering and developing enterprise applications. He started working on SAP HANA in 2009, when it was still a research project, and designed and architected one of the first SAP products that ran on the platform. Today, he leads a team of highly skilled engineers and technologists that help SAP customers improve their day-to-day business with SAP HANA.
