A must buy for any person

I rarely write reviews, but this will be my 2nd review of a book. I was asked to help one of my friends to re-perpose one of the courses that I have created for the iPad, iPHone. I found out that I was in over my head REAL FAST.
After buying for over $300.00 of books, I noticed that nothing was making sense. TILL I BOUGHT THIS BOOK, This gentleman knows on how to take a complicated material and lay it out for the common person.
Do not even hesitate, buy the book and you will not regret it.
I did not buy Book 1, for I knew most of what was covered. But Book 2 and Book 3 is a God Send.

Great way for a Newbie to iOS to Get to See How it Works

At a high level it really gave me a better understanding on creating an App, well it is a prototype App. But, to easily be walked through and how the basics work and with videos for each chapter to back-up the writing, great job!

I actually bought Books 1 and 3 too, since I really liked how the book is written and the ease of understanding it I. I have spent a month trying to watch on-line videos on just creating a basic App but never got a chance to understand what or why on how it was being done. I am truly pleased to have stumbled across the the Book 3 that gave me a sample and got me hooked.

Establishing The Basics: A Lovely Book Geared Toward Novice Cooks

In "No Girls Allowed: Cookbook For Men," Greg Ford starts with a really a great idea, compiles some basic recipes, and formats them into a very appealing presentation. For the premise and layout alone, this is definitely worth a look! Of course, as the title suggests, this is a user-friendly model for non-cooks to achieve better results in the kitchen. And while the book does target men, it is really for novices of any age or gender.

The book is divided into twelve basic categories: (1) Breakfast, (2) Sandwiches, (3) Soups, (4) Sides, (5) Salads, (6) Meat, (7) Chili and Casseroles, (8) Mexican, (9) Barbecue, (10) International, (11) Desserts, and (12) Drinks. Overall, it is a fairly eclectic collection of recipes. And, as with any cookbook, some sections or specific foods will appeal to you more than others. No recipe is more than a page long and some only have one step. Also, you can usually get by with a handful of everyday ingredients that you might even have right in your cupboard or refrigerator. For me, some of the better sections included soup, casseroles and (surprisingly) salads. I used some of the recipes as starting points and modified them to my specific tastes, but was pleased overall by the results.

If I have any reservations about "No Girls Allowed: Cookbook For Men," it is that sometimes the recipes could be a bit of a no-brainer. For example, one recipe is for pasta noodles. Who's going to look in a cookbook for details about boiling pasta when you can just read the pasta package? Others are simply too basic. The Too-Hungry-To-Cook Chili has you throw a can of chili over hot dogs with cheese on top. Even with the most basic of survival skills, I think most guys could come up with something like that on their own! And the recipe for Ashley's Green Beans is the standard green bean casserole you've eaten at every family dinner for decades. How does Ashley get to claim this classic?

I'm still a fan of "No Girls Allowed: Cookbook For Men," I just wanted to help establish the tone of the book. There are plenty of good recipes, helpful cooking suggestions (especially in the meat section) and other nuggets of wisdom. And I love how simply and elegantly it's laid out. Truthfully, though, I felt this was more geared to younger cooks in the way it's put together. If you are a novice, give it a try. It's not at all intimidating. About 3 1/2 stars overall. Simple, fun and tasty!

This cookbook is filled with some amazingly wonderful recipes that are easy to follow and fairly simple to create. My ten and eight year old daughters took the cookbook, attracted to the cover, and began to look through at the vibrant pages and tasty pictures of the food, and began to make me breakfast. The crepes turned out perfect, topped with whipping cream and strawberries, and made by my daughters. This book is great for beginners in the kitchen as well as for those that just love home cooked comfort foods. Each page the author took time to share his thoughts and humor about the recipes. Gotta check out his recipe for tamales! Hidden treasure of fun! This book is the perfect gift for those who enjoy cooking, who need to learn to cook and for those who love to eat!

Great recipes. I have made several already. They range from really easy to a little involved. I bought a few to give to friends and nieces/nephews as graduation presents to take to college. I love the humor too. Very funny quotes.

Not a strong finish

After waiting for the final book, I am sad to say that it left me disappointed. The plot was predictable and the way she finalized the characters' love stories was too abrupt and harsh. Fyn's jealousy reminded me too much of Lence and not like the Fyn we came to appreciate. Orrade and Byren's estrangement left me uneasy. Byren becoming cold and harsh like Lence and Cobalt, not acting so much like the Byren we saw before. The near virgin pregnancy of Florin with the way she acted like a love sick puppy, not like the strong mountain girl she was originally cast as. All this just left me upset with the events of this book.

Characters left w/o completion

I loved the series, the chracters, the worlds, but I didn't feel like she wrapped up her storyline well w/ all the characters. Granted, I know you have to stop somewhere w/ a novel, but tie up the loose ends. You're left hanging w/ some main characters, and the no apparent reason appearance of Garzik, though engaging and wonderful, still leaves me baffled. I was disappointed she left Piro w/o a solid conclusion, and Byren loses everything. Her character development was beautiful and the story growth.

Good book for steady state intial velocity measurements but..............

.....not many people use steady state intial velocity measurements to gain insight into mechanism of biomolecules particularly enzymes these days. With that said, I do have to confess that I gave 4 stars to this book because

1) I think this is the only book (in my opinion) that gives answers to questions like what type of parameters you can get from steady state initial velocity measurements and how far you can take steady-state measurements to.

2) Occasionally, enzymes are not available in plenty, i.e., in substrate quantities and you are stuck with doing steady state kinetics and reading this book will be of use in this situation.

Here are my thoughts on the book.

The book begins with an introduction and a brief account of atoms, how they make bonds, what reactions are and why reactions have to be accelerated (rates). One thing that I found the book introduces nicely is that it clearly states how whether a reaction can occur or not depends on free energy (thermodynamics) but this does not tell us anything about the rates(1st and 2nd chapters).

The third chapter discusses aspects of protein structure beginning with amino acids, primary, secondary structures etc., just like any other biochemical text. The only thing that it lacks is a section on RNA enzymes - because proteins are not the only molecules capable of catalyzing reactions and RNAs can be catalytic. There is the very familiar Tetrahymena ribozyme (an RNA that can act as an enzyme) discovered by Tom Cech (he got the Nobel prize for the same).The fourth chapter focusses on enzyme-ligand binding equilbria. It also introduces the concepts of dissociation and association rate constants and how you can use these in determining the equilibrium binding constants. This is of practical importance because there are systems which take very long time to reach equilibrium and you cannot do equilibrium binding experiments - the only way here is to measure association and dissociation rate constants and get the binding constant from these. the chapter also has a nice table giving values of equilibrium constants and their corresponding free energy. commendable. my ohly concern is that it introduces linearizing of data such as reciprocal and double reciprocal plots which dont make intuitive sense and therefore not many good kineticists use them.

the fifth chapter goes into introducing practical concepts such as what is expected to see in reaction plots when you mix substrate and enzymes together. does a good job but there is no mention of how concentrations of both should be taken into account - which determine whether the reaction is single turnover (Enzyme does its thing only once) or multiple turnover (enzyme does its thing more than once). remember, this book is for purely steady state analysis. you cannot get individual rate constants from doing multiple turnover reactions. all you get is kcat and Km.
the sixth talks about mechanisms and the seventh about doing practical kinetics - here, it goes into why we see lag and burst in reactions sometimes. It also describes with some depth the effect of pH, why we have to maintain the pH, and destabilization of enzyme during reactions.

chapters eight, nine, ten and eleven discuss inhibitor kinetics (reversible and tight binding) and kinetics of enzymes with multiple substrates. All of these deal with measurement of intial velocities, again, remember this is a book with steady-state kinetics. There are a lot of inverse velocity and inverse subtrate plots that I cannot make any intuitive sense out of. The final chapter deals with cooperativity. although it gives a reasonably good introduction on it, the kinetic aspect is dealt with superfically. there arent a lot of kinetic plots but again, this is steady state initial velocity measurements and you can only take it so far.

A modern account of enzymes

Writing a new book of under 400 pages to cover the whole of enzymology is a courageous endeavour. Even if one confines attention to the general aspects that apply to many enzymes, and discusses only those specific mechanisms that are well established or illustrate important points, one can hardly escape the fact that the subject has become too vast to be easily summarized. Moreover, the sort of things that students want to know about enzymes differ according to whether their primary interests are in biochemistry, medicine, chemistry, engineering or molecular biology. Robert Copeland made some rather similar points in the Preface to the first edition of his book, and was honest enough to doubt whether it would be an exception to his conclusion that no single book could fulfil all of his students' needs. Nonetheless, it was successful enough to justify revising and expanding it after just four years, and the result is a worthy addition to the shelves of any enzymologist.

The book is addressed primarily to senior undergraduates or first-year graduates studying enzymology, and the emphasis is more on chemistry than on molecular biology, with definite leanings towards industrial applications. A brief account of the history of enzymology is followed by a second chapter that provides the real introduction to the book. This makes it clear that readers are expected to be able to cope with the basic chemical theory, including molecular orbitals, valence theory, resonance, thermodynamics and the theory of acids and bases. There is a lot of valuable information in this chapter, though weaker students will find the pace very fast. Fortunately the later chapters are more leisurely.

I'm not sure if it is fair to the author to mention the most obvious competitor to his book, Alan Fersht's Structure and Mechanism in Protein Science: a Guide to Enzyme Catalysis and Protein Folding. However, it is such an obvious competitor that potential readers are likely to think of it anyway, so it may be useful to compare the two books briefly. Fersht's book is much stronger on transient-state kinetics, and is more stimulating and even exciting. His is the more likely book to take to read in bed, but Copeland's is more thorough, especially in relation to topics that need to be taught but which are not very fashionable, like the kinetics of the steady state and the mechanistic features that can be deduced from the study of enzyme inhibition. It can be warmly recommended to any teacher needing a text that offers a solid introduction to enzymology.

Entertaining and Inspiring.

I found this book to be very informative and full interesting information about how some of our role models and icons start their day. If you want to learn how to get more out of your life then you could do worse than read this book and see if you need to adopt some of the habits of the rich and famous. It's written in a really good way that entertains but also gets across some useful information.

This book perfectly sums up the habits and ritual of successful people and teaches the reader how he/she can be successful by implementing those practices in their lives. I am very glad that I found this book and I definitely learned a lot from it. This is why I strongly recommend it!

Well Researched. Interesting but lengthy

If you want an honest look into into Robert Stroud's thoughts about prison life then this is the book. He is best known for his mastery of birds, which he meticulously studied and raised while at Leavenworth prison. He died in the 1960's after spending over forty years in prison, but this book was tied up in litigation and was just published in 2014. One of the reasons it was not published sooner was because book publishers feared libel lawsuits from the prison guards and wardens that Stroud references in the book. However, now that those referenced in the book are deceased and the statute of limitations on libel has passed, the book received publication.

This book only contains Part I of what I believe are four parts to be published separately. It does not contain more than a brief reference to his bird studies while in prison, nor does it mention more than a few brief references to Stroud's homosexuality. I mention this because news articles about this book have heavily referenced those topics, so that those considering buying this book for discussions on those areas should keep this in mind. Instead, the first half of the book contains an extremely detailed history of the prison system in America, including the laws that formed the prison system, common punishments of prisoners, and descriptions of prison life and common types of criminals. The second half of the book discusses some of the wardens and guards that Stroud dealt with while imprisoned and includes some personal anecdotes.

The book begins with a history of the prison system from early US history up until Stroud's death in 1963. What amazes me is that Stroud is entirely self taught and unbelievably his formal education never went past third grade. Yet, the book reads with the sophistication of an interesting textbook. He thoroughly explains the laws that led to the creation of the Federal and State prison systems, how different prisons differed in quality of life issues and he explains the different prisoner punishments from prisons across all regions of the US. He also describes the most common types criminals and the crimes that were most often committed starting back in the early 1900s.

I identified with many of Stroud's feelings on what is broken with the prison system. For example, it was Stroud's position that "it is easier to heal from bruises than mental punishments." I also thought that he fairly characterized the guards and wardens that he dealt with in prison. He seemed to admire wardens like McCloughery and "The King" for being fair when doling out punishments. He respected them for allowing him his books and other instruments to conduct his studies and keep his mind active. He also spoke well of a few guards for their judiciousness and fairness (for example Big Joe). While I was shocked at some of the horrors that Stroud mentioned as punishments (straight jackets, water boarding etc in some prisons), I was mostly surprised at how fair wardens like McCloughery and the King could be to their prisoners back in Stroud's time. Stroud certainly portrays the good with the bad in this book and his insights on prison life are definitely not one sided against prison staff.

However, that said, I don't agree with all of Stroud's positions. For example, I don't agree that prisoners should vest in earning good time such that no bad behavior whatsoever can erase time off of their sentence earned for good behavior. I believe that murder or serious assaults committed by prisoners against each other or against guards, that is not in self defense should lessen and count against good time earned. But, I do agree with most of his feelings on what is wrong with the prison system and the laws surrounding it, which lead to recidivism among prisoners.

The reason that I don't give the book five stars is that I think a lot of it could be condensed. Stroud is meticulous in researching and describing daily prison life, the laws that created prisons and the punishments that prisoners suffered. Yet, it would have been more interesting to me if it were less verbose and if it contained more anecdotes to break up the long explantations, especially in the first half of the book. I would also have liked to see more of Stroud's personality come out in the book. This book has a very clinical undertone. I realize that his personality was to be very methodical and meticulous, but a bit more passion about his life in prison along with more personal stories, (especially in the first half of the book) would have been helpful to me, as a reader to identify with him.

The atrocities that Stroud writes about are jarring, especially at a time when prisoners were afraid to speak out. I admire him for wanting to publish this book that exposes the prison system in such a raw form while still a prisoner. I recommend sticking with this book past the first half as the second part contains more interesting anecdotes. Overall, I did enjoy the book. It can be slow in some sections, and it is a long read, but worth it.

well written and a pleasure to read

I expected a history book on the penal system in America and delightfully ended up getting more: a brief overview of the author's childhood, wonderful anecdotes concerning the implementation of prison rules, and a glimpse into life as it was like 100 years ago.

For instance, we learn that Stroud was left-handed and forced to write with his right hand in 3rd grade, which caused him to fail 3rd grade 6 years in a row. When he was 12 years old he got a job as a heater boy to help support his family because his dad wouldn't pay child support. He later quit school and "hoboed his way over most of the United States" for three years before going to Alaska while 16-17 years old and working in construction camps and restaurants.

Despite his abysmal educational beginnings, Stroud had the drive to devote 22 years of his incarcerated life to "research in the fields of avian physiology, hematology, pathology, and therapeutics." This led to two books that advanced the current body of knowledge on the diseases of birds.

There is almost no mention of birds in this volume. Besides the writer's childhood, there is a description of the different character types contained in prison; a history of prison conditions, rules, and punishments; and the particulars of daily life behind bars in respect to food, recreation, employment, etc...

The book has both tragedy and comedy. It was sad to read about the consequences for failing to meet the quota on a prison task. One of the punishments was six hours in a straight jacket that was called a "shitsack" by the prisoners. You have to read the story to find out the unbelievable meaning behind this. And when you are reading that section of the book, you will come across other harrowing torture methods. On a lighter note, you read about O.P. Halligan, the warden of McNeil Island, and his idiosyncrasies. He wanted to make sure that he understood every prisoner's argument without revealing any lack of education. This leads to a comical story that I do not want to ruin.

"Looking Outward" exceeded all expectations. It was well written (I spotted 2-3 typos which were easy to figure out and didn't take away from the story- "It ain't what I need. Maybe I like to pay by debts" should probably read "pay my debts") and contained Stroud's opinions on the different topics making the book truly invaluable. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone over 15 years old.

I would be much obliged to the publisher, Amazon.com, and anyone else involved if they would release the remaining unpublished volumes and Stroud's autobiography "Bobbie" forthwith. In which case, please notify me so I don't have to keep checking Amazon periodically for their release.

incredibly entertaining artwork!

I read this book to my children when they were small in 1985. We had checked it out from the public library. I laughed so hard at not only the
story, but the expressions on the apartment
dwellers faces as the rocket continued to burst
its' way up through their apartments on its' trip
out the top of the building! I have been searching for my own copy ever since, and am
excited to have found it at Amazon.com. It will
be a welcome addition to my own library, and I will certainly be sharing it later with my three little
grand-daughters. I'm already laughing in anticipation of its arrival in the mail!

The "Hole" Story

This is a fabulous book, I remember it from my childhood and my family still refers back to it to this day. There is just something so endearing about the concept and execution that is uniquely Newell. The illustrations are vintage and expressive. The text hilarious. Only a curmudgeon wouldn't like this book. I'm glad to see it available again.

Better to be out of print!

My wife had a copy of the original book and shared it with our children. We bought this edition for a grandson and were very, very disappointed. The lack of the hole through each page--a signature characteristic of the original edition--was not nearly as bad as the faulty printing/page assembly which resulted in the illustrations being out of sync with the verse.
Don't waste your money on the Dodo Press paperback version.
